My computer can't haddle C3C, can it?

@Babbler:
A 500MHz P3 + 128MB RAM (HD space , ok, you'll need some, but unless your HD is really cramped, it doesn't matter) can handle C3C well if you only play standard size maps. No need to turn off animations. However, loading something bigger (for exampl, just starting the mIddle Ages Conquest) needs about half an hour.
IMHO when you upgrade your RAM, it should work. But don't expect too much.

And I certainly wouldn't spend the money to put a 60 GB hard drive in that old computer (actually you might not even be able to find one that small). I'd be suprised if the motherboard would even be able to handle one that large (better check before you buy) and you'll be *very* lucky to find any memory of that style anymore (it's at least 4 generations ago).
Look into buying something new. You can get a 2+ ghz, 40+ gb hard drive, at least 128-256 megs memory and all the fixins for under $500 easy. I understand if you're strained for cash, but I'd hate to see you spend $100-$150 to try to upgrade your old computer when it won't help you that much when for just a bit more you can get a brand new computer.

Hints:
-You can play Standard map at "ok" speed.
Anything bigger is way to slow.
-Turn off music, it eats RAM and makes game way to slow.
-unit animations are not problem (they are just a little bit choppy, which is not much of a problem)
Actually, the weakest link is your HDD.
C3C eats 1.6GB of disk space.
P.S.
If you could get at least some extra RAM, it should work much better.
64MB is the minimum (32MB is just a joke).

Computers here in the great white north don't come as cheap here as it is state-side
. Looking at the future shop flyer, a HP computer AMD XP 2800+, 512 MB, 80 GB, CD-RW/DVD-ROM cost 1259.99 or 999.99 w/ rebates (Although, it comes with a moniter/printer, both of which I have).
I play Huge-stanard maps on various settings, and on my computer they play well, baring no music but sound/f are okay. Seeing that I would have a problem playing the conquests, which is what I wanted to play.
So, given that C3C is not an opition for me (with my current computer), would PTW be okay? I heard that with the final patch (what is it, 1.22f or 1.29f?) PTW is okay. Is that true? Would I be able to play MP? (I have a DSL conection, BTW) Is it enjoyable?
PS: The motherboard supports FP DRAM, EDO-DRAM and SDRAM. What types of RAM are there now?

I would definitly say "it's time for an upgrade". Processor speed and atleast 512mb of Ram is the most important. HD size and speed matters a little and alot less with auto save turned off.

Civ is more dependent on RAM than on CPU speed - you can even play standart maps at acceptable performance on a turtle-slowww AMD K6-1 200Mhz (!) when it has a ton of RAM slotted in.
A 350MHz/512 mb machine swallows large maps w/o problems.

dell.com or gateway.com. I'm sure they'll ship to Canada. Or go to www.newegg.com and build your own. Very cheap and around $500 for "entry" level which is off the charts. Same price at the Dell Canada site actually.
As for memory, standard is pretty much dual channel PC-3200/184 pin DDR stuff. There are tons of different bus speeds and such, all depending on your motherboard. What you mentioned hasn't been sold in years. However I see Newegg has some PC-133 SDRAM, 128mb for about $25. So if that works for you, try it out, but I wouldn't spend much more then that to upgrade your old computer, just not worth it. If you're looking at $150 to upgrade you're already a quarter of the way to something brand new and 50 times faster.
But if you don't need a monitor or printer, even better! You can assemble your own parts cheaply (you can use your old floppy, cd-rom and stuff) or I'm sure Dell or whomever would sell you just the computer itself without the monitor and stuff.

Thanks for the advice.
I was in EB Games today after my bother and I went to the dump (realy). Looking around, I found a copy of Civilization III: Play The World for $14.97 (+GST). It was the same price as Master of Orion II and Master of Orion III (almost, at $14.99). It was an opertunity I could not miss.
So, I installed the game, downloaded and installed patch 1.29f, and started the game. The movie played okay, with a few pauses here and there, nothing much. The single-player is okay, with only one crash so far.
As for multplayer, PTW would simply crash and not load up agian. However, this was due to an incorrect installation of Direct X (It was 9.0b, but it thought it was 8.0). With that fixed, the hotseat mode went okay, but did crash on exit.
All-in-all, it okay, but I am going to hunt down some RAM so I improve proformance and I be able to play internet games.
. I going to replace the computer in 2+ years, when I have completed CEGEP, and can finial start to buy thing other than textbooks .
