my first Civ3 conquest victory

Maybe its due to my normal playing style but I recently noticed that in 5 months or so playing Civ3 I have had all the victory types except conquest. On further deliberation I realised that I had also been nowhere near a conquest victory. So I decided to rectify that situation and do some experimenting.

I gave myself the easiest option..chieftain on tiny pangea..disabled all victory conditions except conquest and set about the task. I wont relate all the details of what happened because thats not the purpose of my post. Suffice to say I got a conquest victory in AD170 using only swordsmen to do it.

But it was a revelation to me. No change of govt type, no building aquaducts, no fannying about with cathedrals and happiness, no building wonders. The first city I took with 3 swordsmen; the rest with an ever increasing marauding band of finally about 10 swordsmen. Nice and clean, nice and simple, a huge contrast to all my previous games. I finished the game in about 2-3 hours where it normally takes me a week to finish a game because I am one of those who micromanage everything.

The purpose of my post is to encourage anybody in the same position to try this experiment. It was a real eye-opener for me and I see the game differently now. I am sure conquest victories get a lot more difficult when the settings are not as simple as the ones I chose. I will certainly be doing more experimenting..maybe same on continents, archpelago...larger maps..higher difficulty levels etc. I did have to build a couple of galleys even though it was a pangea.

One question for those who are a lot more experienced than me at conquest victory....can it be achieved by waiting until later ages before you start the attack ? In this game I attacked every tribe as soon as I met them and speed seemed to be an essential part.

Just play as the Aztecs, and make 3-4 jaguar warriors. You'll be able to destroy all the other civs in a matter of turns.

It is great to try new styles of play. Lately, I've been browsing the succession games in the stories section & finding new goals to try in my games, like sticking with despotism, or trying to get another civ to win a certain way. There's a lot of options to spice up the fun.

Staying at war is the easiest way to play the game, IMHO (go Monarchy! :king: ). Mainly because while the AI is excellent at playing a builders game (especially at high levels with a production bonus), it can still be conquered with concentrated force. Not to mention using exploits to help your cause, if you feel ok about that.

I think your strategy would be good for the lower levels, while you hold a production edge. At regent, where things are equal, it would be possible, but definitely take longer & more effort.

Monarch & above, I don't think an early conquest would be very easy. I'd say it is possible though, cause I'm sure the experts are capable of pulling it off. However, I think the later in the game you start your conquest, the easier it gets. The AI gets several bonus units at high levels so your military is outnumbered at turn 1. They also research faster & will be ahead of you techwise, at least in the ancient age. It may take a while before you dig yourself out of the hole the AI builds for you early on.

Sounds familiar.....sort of. In my current game (Regent) I started
with a "Warrior Gambit" out of frustration (A failed builder-game)
As it turned out I became the biggest and baddest civ from day one........a first for me.:D
It probably won't be a conquest-vic....on the other hand, the other civs are just waiting on me to decide how I want to win now
:D :D :D

cool..

I'm trying for my first conquest win right now.. I didn't make it quite as easy as you did but I did stack the deck slightly in my favor. Large map, continents, mostly water, 7 opponents, playing as Japan.

Right now everyone else is gone except for me and Germany. Within the last 20 or so turns I finished off the Zulus (last remaining civ on my continent) and the English (they lived on a tiny continent I nicknamed "Australia") Germany is all the way on the other side of the world spread across two mid-sized continents. It's 1940AD and I'm still a little while away form getting nukes.. but when I do I'm gonna launch my first NUCLEAR WAR.. armageddon baby.. muahahahahaha :nuke:

My best score is still from a tiny map where I played the Iroqouis and despot rushed thier UUs after securing the only horses and iron with despot rushed barrack-produced despot rushed veteran warriors then swordsmen. WOrth 4400 points on Regent.

This sounds similar to my latest game. I've completely killed the Russians and the Zulus and the Germans only have 3 cities left on another island. I have the opportunity to use my Cavalry to wipe out the other 4 civs on my island or I can just sit back and claim or the later wonders. I think I will try one more war as I am the only civ on this continent with Cavalry

yay! FINALLY conquered the world!

gotta love nukes and cheap, CHEAP bakcstabbing tactics.. muahaha

maybe next time I conquer the world I'll do it the "fair" way for more of a challenge.

Conquest and domination are the 2 victory conditions that are far more difficult the larger the map/ the more opponents. As well as that conquest is also far harder if the landmasses are islands as opposed to 1 big pangea
