After 8 months and about a gazillion techs to have reached first, I finally got one! At some point I was really thinking it was some kind of myth. Though I have been playing C3C on a nearly daily basis between last november and last april, I simply never ever got one.

The only bad thing this time, that I got it for Flight, on a moment the game was practically over anyway. And it was on Monarch level. Does that increase chances (compared to emperor or deity)? I don't think so...

Playing Monarch will allow the player to be be ahead in Tech much easier than when playing deity (for instance); and therfore increase your chance of getting SGL.

Yeah, of course. But I have really had zillions of techs first, yet never a SGL before....

Of course you know that the chances of getting one are only 3% (5% for sci civ)? I find it surprising it took you this long to get one, but such are the laws of probability. You may get three in your next game, or something that will even it out eventually.

The thing I've seen referenced that I have never been able to get is getting more than one tech from a goody hut. I have seen people refer to getting three techs from one hut, but not me. :hmm:

Three techs form ONE hut?????? I have never heard of that.

BTW: I did see a sreeny once, that showed two SGLs after a Philosophy-Extra Free Tech combo.

I think 'SesnOfWthr/True Believer' wanted to said that one can have three Tech per turn providing you visited at least three Huts.
The only time I have heard about having three (or more) techs from a Hut was getting ONE tech from the Hut and then trade it for more. But as Stapel, I never heard about having more than ONE tech per hut.

As for SGLs, I've been playing the Byzantines constantly for ten days on Emperor level with mixed results. I played 6 games, all of which I abandoned after entering the third era (because I was already and obviously dominating).
So far, I got 4 SGLs, 2 of which in the same game. The point (as Stapel mentions it) is to get them early enough so they can make a real difference. Obtaining one very early and rushing the Pyramids or the Artemision is huge. Beating the CPs to Bach or Sistine is still grat, but IMO the sooner the better.
However, getting SGLs early means going for the expensive techs ASAP, esp writing which at this point is so costly that it makes almost no difference wether I spend 1 RP (50 turns) or all I have (46 turns...).
Furthermore, if you're alone, and several CPs are together on the same continent, trading techs will allow them to keep ahead of you in spite of all your efforts. In a recent game -still as the Byzantines - I researched writing from day one, then philosophy. It was long and I got no bonus tech... Bad news! At the same time, my curragh found the Egyptians, who were in contact with four other civs and had all the ancient techs, and I mean all of them.
So don't get mad about SGLs. They're invaluable, but you take a huge risk going for expensive techs to maintain a lead...

Thanks Aggie! BTW, It wasn't for flight...... It was even later, as I now remember I used it to rush the Universal Suffrage...... As I said before: The game qwas already in the click-until-finish situation.

@morchuflex: Given you start with alphabet, there is a great way to get to writing, philo and the free tech first, though not always possible. Be sure to settle at a river right on top of a commerce bonus tile. Settling on a gold hill or gems jungle really does the trick. Settling on silks, ivory or spices also helps a lot. This way I have reached quite some top starts! It really can be worth the delay!

I have been playing since the start of the year and still have not had one. . Maybe there is still hope  , I was wondering if it was
a myth too :crazyeye: . I mostly play on Monarch or Emp. :scan: .
:hatsoff: to you and congratulations.

I have never in my entire life had a Military Great Leader. And I play Civ on a daily basis.
  :help: .

NEVER, wow that is amazing. You must be an ULTRA-peacefull builder type.
:scan: Do you war often? Do you use mostly veteran units from barrack
cities to get elite units. I usually play as Celts, Iroquois or Vikings and have
many, many MGL's. :D ;)

I war alot, but tend not to get into long, massive campaigns. I build barracks often, but usually only for defensive purposes. I've only been playing since I got thins for my 13th birthday (Dec. 15 2003) so I guess I still have my chances.

I've gotten exactly 1 SGL, but that was in Multiplayer.

this is funny. i got my first SGL two days ago as the Greeks.

Congrats Stapel! :D

It took me (I estimated) over 200 "first" techs to get an SGL, and I was playing Scientific civs!

My first SGL was on my very first C3C game as Scandinavia. It was the early Middle Ages and I was about halfway finished with building Sun Tzu's Art of War when I got a SGL. It was perfect timing since I had Chivalry, so I changed Sun Tzu's to Knights Templar and when that was finished I rushed Sun Tzu's.

I get lots of MGLs (about 2 per game) but I win mostly aggressive victories.

Hi folks !

Normally i play with the 0% Science Strat, so i wont get any SGL, but in one game where i had out-teched the AI, i got 5 (yes FIVE) SGL. That secured the Wonders of the MA to be mine.
MGL i normally have several of, cause i am a Warmonger and i like Armies. Especially with the UU ´s from the Aztec or the Iroquies, armies are a very important part of my early wars. And MGL´s are very handy to rushthe Palace , the FP and the SPHQ.

Have fun !!

One day I got two SGLs in the same game, as the Vikings. I usually play scientific civs, but it seems that Scandinavia gets just as many (if not more) SGLs. Of course, that's just my computer. I don't get military leaders that often - perhaps one for every three scientific leaders I have.
