My game has crashed several times since the June Update

So my Civ6 game has crashed a couple of times since at least the June 2020 update/patch. It happens when I click on the next turn. The game freezes and crashes, and I'm exited out of the game. It hasn't happened every time I played Civ6 on Steam though. I want to know how to figure out what's causing the crash. Does Civ6 have Crash Logs or something similar?

edit: Nevermind, I saw Gedemon's stickied post. I will try to find them and attach them here later.

Ok, I've attached the DxDiag, Civilization VI.exe, and Logs.

I haven't actually checked the logs, but for me, the DX12 (DirectX) mode (which you can select from the launcher) has produced crashes in ~every other patch. Now it's broken again, last patch it worked, before that it was broken etc. DX11 version has worked constantly well. In case you are using DX12, try switching to DX11. If you're already using DX11, could you also upload a save file from just before the crash? Would probably help the devs, too.

That's not possible anymore unfortunately. I continued playing on from the crash and saved over that one. Guess I have to wait until my game crashes again, then I will upload that save file.

How to switch to DX11?

In Steam version, when you start the game in Steam and get 2K launcher open (unless you've modded to skip it altogether, revert to original if so), there's this white text under the play-button telling which version is in use. Just click it and select DirectX11.

I rather not bring the 2K Launcher back. It wouldn't load, so I found out a way to skip it.

There are alternative ways, though I've never tried 'em. In GraphicsOptions.txt (found in ...my documents\my games\civ), open with e.g. notepad, delete the following

[DX12]
;Throw away all compute dispatches. This is a debugging switch
DiscardCompute 0

;Enable packing small textures into 4K aligned buffers instead of 64K aligned ones. Saves GPU memory, especially on low-end devices.
Use4KSmallTexturePacking 1

;If supported, use Root Signature 1.1 (1), or don't (0), or platform default(-1)
EnableRootSig_1_1 -1

;Set DX12 compute queue usage on (1), off (0), or platform default(-1).
EnableAsyncCompute -1

;Enable DX12 split-screen optimizations for multi-GPU systems. On (1), Off(0), or platform default (-1) [Platform Default is OFF, but may change in the future.]
EnableSplitScreenMultiGPU 0

and insert

;Submit draws via the DX11 immediate context
DX11_ForceImmediate 1

then save the file.

You might want to make a backup of the file first, but you can also delete and download it again via verify file integrity in Steam.

Since the June patch I did not have a game without at least one crash as described above in the first posting.
Months before that my game did not crash at all in any of my games. I admit, it is getting annoying by now.

Me too, i even reinstalled the game, but this crash STILL happens:
(it happens without any mods too, on default firaxis map)

Running a i7-5820K + 1080Ti and half the game i have to play it in Strategic view with Medium graphics. For me the DX11 version is "more stable" then DX12, and I have over 3000h of Civ6-DX12, before NFP. Never had such issues. Now it crashes when I drag the map to fast, or zoom in or out, or double clicking something... In Strategic view, the game freezes for 10 or so seconds, but crash less.
In Dx11 i don't get this Unhandled Exception, only when using DX12. The "Error reading address" varies from time to time, but Call Stack is always the same.
I also tried update Nvidia drivers from 451.67 to Hotfix 451.85 that should fix "random freezes in some games"...

I just edits the command string in Steam App for Civ 6, and tell Steam to start with DX11 version.
Right click on Civ6 in game list, go to General | Set launch options... | past in file and path to exe. This in " " | ended with %command%.

This is the same crash I keep getting, though I have no idea what is causing it. I will try using DX11.

Edit: DX11 still crashed, and this is after a fresh install.

Edit x2: Updated my graphics drivers, now it freezes, with the crash report happening in the background.

Also, every single one of my games has crashed except a Hotseat game I played with no AI.

Still no game without at least one crash, dx11 or dx12, with or without mods seems to make no difference. Hope they get that fixed, it becomes quite annoying.

I even tried the legacy branch which was the previous patch and got the same problem!

New Nvidia driver 452.06 was released yesterday (includes some of the 451.85 fixes). Reports are that games running DX12 are performing better.

I have deselected Hyperthreading/SMT in the BIOS and my last session (about 2 hours) was ok without any error.

Bummer, this didn't solve my problem. Still having that same crash bkd_civ posted a picture of.

Did you do a clean driver install or just update? Sometimes updates can break your drivers.

Running any mods? Anytime I would get an unhandled exception after NFP it was mod related, which is frustrating to diagnose as there wouldn't necessarily be any error info in the logs.

When you did a fresh install of the game, did you completely uninstall Civ 6 - uninstall through Steam and then delete any leftover files/folders in "...\Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization VI" and "...\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier's Civilization VI"? I had to do that once last year when I was having issues.

I'll try all that and see if it helps, thanks!

Removing all the mods helped, and then I went and fixed something in a mod which seems to have stopped the crashing. It was using an Effect in a field that asked for a ModifierType, oops!

If you have time, I'd be curious what mods you had enabled and which one in particular had the mistake.
