My Huge Sid Milk Run

You were well on your way to one of the best write-ups of all-time...

Whatever you decide, please take notice that your thorough play-by-play is greatly appreciated by many.

Winners never Quit.

It will effect your score, among other things So make them Very VERY sorry for that.

My apologies to everyone who hoped I would continue my first effort. When I thought about the hundreds of hours I would be spending on this game, I decided I really wanted something I was going to be happy with. When it was over, I wanted to be able to say that was the best I could do.

Anyway, I’ve got a new one going, and I think this has enormous potential. This game will hopefully feature as entertaining a write-up and much better play :).

Settings are the same as the previous game, but the domination limit is a much higher 4481.

Big positives of this map:

I have a lot of room to expand peacefully.
I am on the Alpha continent per CAII.
My capital is inland enough to form a couple real rings.
I have a ridiculous number of bonus grasslands and lots of fresh water.
And, the big one – my next door neighbor the Ottomans have built the Pyramids and are working on the Temple of Artemis.

Downsides to this map:

I haven’t found a single native luxury.
I haven’t explored much because it took me forever to find the coast to build a curragh.

We’ll pick up the tale in 1325 BC because that is when I completed Philosophy, traded through Polytheism and selected Monarchy. I also traded for The Wheel and found I had horses which pretty much satisfied the last of my conditions to play on (although I don’t seem to have iron). As of 1325 BC, I have:

17 cities
32 citizens
3 settlers
24 workers
18 warriors
4 curraghs

Score = 595.

You’ll notice that beautiful choke point with the Ottomans. The water to the south and west of that is salt water. Unfortunately, the Ottomans recently learned Map Making, so they will soon just sail around me.

That’s enough for background – it’s time to cause some trouble. First, I relieve the Zulu of their 583 gold for Monarchy, and they will even provide Mathematics and Map Making. Then I declare war on the Zulu.

Talk to the Aztecs next – we renegotiate peace tied to an alliance against the Zulu, and I throw in Map Making. We have a deal.

Finally to the Ottomans – I don’t renegotiate peace with this one since that would be a little too dangerous. We sign an alliance, I provide Monarchy and receive 248 gold.

I revolt to Monarchy drawing 5 turns of anarchy.

1275 – The Zulu complete the Statue of Zeus.

1200 BC – My Monarchy is established. The Ottomans complete the Temple of Artemis. On its surface, that is outstanding, but now I have to reconsider my Great Library ploy. I was planning on getting the Ottomans to build it for me, but I won’t be happy if they build it in the same city as the Temple of Artemis.

Micromanage everything for food – all cities should be at +5 fpt ASAP. I rush a harbor so I can trade as soon as possible. I pick up my first slave of the game from the Aztecs for 7 gpt. Horses are connected.

In the cascade, the Zulu complete Hanging Gardens.

1150 BC – The Ottomans have Construction and start the Great Wall. I buy another Aztec slave this time giving Philosophy and getting 234 gold and 2 gpt in addition to the slave.

1075 BC – The Aztecs learned Code of Laws. The only completely unknown Ancient Age tech is Currency. Once that is learned, the Ottomans will be in the Middle Ages, possibly with Feudalism, but I’m nowhere close to attacking them yet.

1050 BC – The Ottomans now have Currency. They don’t know Code of Laws yet – only the Aztecs do, and the Ottomans and Aztecs have not met.

1000 BC stats:

22 cities
64 citizens
3 settlers
35 workers
2 slaves
1 mounted warrior
1 spearman
21 warriors
4 curraghs

Score – 830

Literature due in 6 – I’m still not sure what I am going to do with it :hmm:.

My towns are growing nicely – most of my core has reached size 4 and +5 fpt, so in no more than 12 turns, I should have a bunch of cities. I still have multiple settler/worker factories running. I have to admit I’m driving myself a little batty by continually moving warriors around to try to keep luxury spending to a minimum :crazyeye:.

It looks like the salt water on the Ottoman border may just be a lake after all.

Only 4 contacts still, but my curraghs are still out busting more fog.

Sounds good, Chamnix. I'll be waiting to see how this one turns out.

975 BC – The Zulu have picked up Code of Laws. It can’t be long now before the Ottomans get it and enter the Middle Ages.

950 BC – The Ottomans have entered the Middle Ages. Now I just watch to see when they start Sun Tzu’s Art of War to find out when they get Feudalism.

The Zulu have landed on the northern part of “my” land. I guess I’ll have to get some units up there, since I am actually at war with them (I keep forgetting things like that).

925 BC – Babylon comes across the strait. I guess they will want a piece of my land too. Even worse, they will make contact with other AI – I wanted them to be my personal pets.

The Ottomans have furs available – I buy them for 19 gpt.

900 BC – Literature is due in 1, but I turn research off instead of completing it. The Great Wall and Great Lighthouse are still under Construction, and I want to wait for cascade to die. I think I want the Zulu to build the Great Library since they seem to be taking a bit of a beating in the power curve – it may not be easy to capture before Education (I have to go through the Ottomans).

The Aztecs suddenly show up with 900+ gold. At some point they have to break our alliance + peace, so I start borrowing from them and start rushing military to get ready for the Ottomans.

875 BC – Aztecs complete the Great Lighthouse. Ottomans complete the Great Wall :(. It’s in a town I can’t even see yet.

I find a source of iron in Ottoman territory. It’s not hooked up so it is not their main source of iron, but it is one that I can realistically hope to make mine.

825 BC – The Ottomans have started Sun Tzu’s. None of my other contacts have Currency yet. The Zulu move a lone impi into position to attack (or start my Golden Age), and they founded another city.

My alliances expire with nobody breaking them. I renew peace + alliance vs. the Zulu with the Aztecs. The Aztecs demand 17 gpt to keep the deal alive :gripe:.

The Ottomans are a tougher decision. My military of 5 mounted warriors, 7 catapults, 2 spearman, and a heck of a lot of regular warriors is obviously not very close to ready. I will just let the alliance lapse (or let the Ottomans cancel it), and then I will bring them back in tied to peace which hopefully will buy me enough time.

800 BC – The Ottomans cancel our alliance against the Zulu, but they don’t actually sign peace. The sneaky Zulu move an impi toward an unguarded city, and the Babylonians have founded a city in my territory, but their boat turned back before meeting anyone.

I just guarded the cities but didn’t attack yet.

My dedicated settler factories in my core are being shut down. They will be permitted to reach size 7 at the same time as my other towns and will start producing military. From now on, settlers and workers will only be built in towns without fresh water, by rushing if necessary.

775 BC – The Zulu impi continues to inch closer.

750 BC – The Impi invades deeper, and an archer comes to make a real attack. The Aztecs come from out of nowhere to found a city.

I’m sure I will have to kill that Zulu archer and start my Golden Age. I think it is very good timing – cities will be at size 7 very soon, and I will add workers to make them even bigger.

730 BC – Russia declared war on the Ottomans! I assume that is a good thing, but I have no idea where Russia is! My boats have been sailing around for approximately forever now, and I still only have 4 contacts.

The Zulu impi has gone too far – I cannot guard all the cities he is threatening so I kill him and start my Golden Age. I also dispatch the Zulu archer. Many towns are now capable of 2-3 turn mounted warriors.

710 BC – The Zulu have discovered Currency and have joined the Ottomans in the Middle Ages. I should have plenty of mounted warriors to handle the Zulu, so the new units are moved to prepare for the Ottoman war.

690 BC – I kill another Zulu archer (my third straight victory without a loss) and get my first elite.

670 BC – The Aztecs have become Middle Aged. I rush a galley on my southern coast to sail along the Ottoman’s southern coast – that has to be the way to Russia.

I lose 2 mounted warriors and gain 1 elite and 1 elite victory capturing New Intombe. I guess I will try to keep it instead of razing it.

650 BC – An Aztec spearman comes wandering out of their city. I wonder where he is headed :hmm:.

I take out the Zulu archer for my second elite win.

630 BC – The Aztec spearman approaches Neodakheat, but I don’t get the leave or declare option. I stuff a warrior in to guard the city for this turn.

I suicide one curragh in the hope of making more connections – it sunk.

610 BC – The Ottomans have started Sistine Chapel. I’m very glad they went Theology instead of Chivalry, but I have to take them down now.

The polite Aztecs’ spearman continues through my territory. After all this time of not breaking our alliance, they will just declare on me for nothing. I move all my citizens to maximize cash including making taxmen everywhere except in my core. I free up 188 gpt which is enough to buy Currency and Construction and take the Aztec’s 34 gold. I can’t afford Code of Laws, but I can get that from Babylon anytime I want – they still lack Mathematics and Polytheism. I make Monty furious, I tell the Aztecs to leave or declare, they declare, and I keep my gold.

I pick up a third elite win killing the Zulu archer.

I give the Babylonians Mathematics for Code of Laws and their 169 gold so I can see what is going on in the Middle Ages. The Zulu have Republic, but no Middle Age techs. The Ottomans of course have Monotheism and Feudalism (no Engineering, yes Republic).

Then I go through the fun task of replacing all my citizens to get back the 15 or 10 spt that I had before I had to raise gpt for the Aztec deal :shake:. I cycle off my military builds to start putting marketplaces in a few towns at a time.

Meanwhile, there is a real sense of urgency developing on my western flank. The Ottomans must die soon. The troops are arriving:

The game plan is to raze New Edrine first. I’ll put a bunch of spears on those hills across the choke. Hopefully that will encourage the Ottomans to fight only on one front, so I have a chance of holding off their initial rush. Six turns until my purchase of Ottoman furs expires. The attack should be very soon after that.

Score at 610 BC = 1256

570 BC – New Intombe’s flip risk is a little higher than I’d like, so I raze New Ngome instead of capturing it. I gained another elite mounted warrior and elite victory #4.

550 BC – My Forbidden Palace finally completes. The Zulu now have Feudalism. The Ottomans have a source of iron available for purchase, but war is only a few turns away…

A curragh suicides off the northeast coast of Babylon – sees a Russian ship, so I make contact even if I sink. The Russians are nicely backwards – still in Despotism and lacking 2 required techs to make the Middle Ages. They have captured 3 Mongol slaves and a Mongol scout – now where would the Mongols be? An embassy reveals they have at least 3 native luxuries and have 4 total. They are at war with both the Zulu and the Ottomans :hmm:.

530 BC – My Russian curragh survived and can continue the hunt for the Mongols.

510 BC – I raze the Aztec city of Chapultepec with elite victories #5 and 6 leaving just the Babylonian intruders on my land.

The Babylonians demand Polytheism. I laugh, they back down. The Ottomans ask me for a military alliance against the Russians – not happening.

490 BC – Hmm… the Ottomans are about to found another city with a settler/pike pair – this one on a hill. I think I’m going to have to attack next turn even though I’m not really ready. Hopefully they are sufficiently distracted by their other 2-3 wars that they won’t overwhelm me before I get set up.

My purchase of furs expires this turn. The Ottomans will not let it continue at the current price, and I can’t sign for another 20 turns, so the luxury slider gets bumped to 30%.

The Aztecs start building Sun Tzu’s.

470 BC – The Ottomans have Engineering – that’s interesting. I decide I’m as ready to declare as I can get in the short term. I have many towns building 2 turn mounted warriors for the rest of my Golden Age (7 more turns). My current military:

The Zulu are at war with the Ottomans already, so I see what they would give for peace with me and war with the Ottomans:

So I declare on the Ottomans – hopefully the Zulu won’t keep this deal too long.

I bind the Russians to a deal along with a peace treaty:

I raze the new Ottoman town on the hill at a cost of 1 mounted warrior (1 retreated). New Izmit is defended by a spear on top right now, but I still don’t have enough to take it because of the walls:

On another positive note, New Izmit is not connected by road, so reinforcements will need an extra step.

430 BC – The battle for New Edrine takes place. It is only defended by 2 pikes, and I raze it without loss (a couple Mounties retreated). I also pick off a stray pike and MDI outside of towns.

On the IBT, the Ottomans sink a galley – it may be a long time before I get the other contacts .

410 BC – I fail to take New Izmit from the 4 spears :gripe:. Next turn it will fall easily. I spread out my spears across the southern hills. They will be fortified next turn, and hopefully the Ottomans will seek out the easier targets up north and leave the southern path alone.

Score at 410 BC = 1562

IBT – I lose 2 spears to Ottoman MDI. The Ottomans have a lot of galleys they move around. The Zulu start Sun Tzu’s. The Ottomans complete Sun Tzu’s.

390 BC – My spear wall is complete. Hopefully the Ottomans will just ignore them and take the northern passage where my “defense” is weaker.

New Izmit is razed killing the 2 spears without any casualties gaining 2 more slaves and 1 more elite. I kill 3 MDI and a spear also without casualties picking up elite win #7. No Ottoman units are in sight :).

I’m having too much trouble getting my cities up to size 12 without cultural expansions. I decide to complete Literature in a few turns and start prebuilding libraries in the towns that need expansions. When the prebuilds are ready, then I will complete Literature (it would 1 scientist to finish).

IBT – America declared war on the Russians – I have no idea where America is. The Aztecs land a spear and horse near Chondote. No Ottoman units appear. The Zulu learned Engineering.

370 BC – My leader fishing stack takes a step northwest. I kill the Aztec “stack” without loss. Set 1 scientist to complete Literature.

IBT – 2 Ottoman MDI try their luck against my spears, but my spears kill both gaining 1 elite spearman. I complete Literature and go to the Big Picture to change a couple builds to libraries. The Zulu will only pay 869 gold for Literature which is about half their gold. It’s disappointing, but I’ll take what I can get.

350 BC – Research off again. My fishery is fully functional:

I kill the Ottoman MDI and archer (both with elites – up to 9 wins now) and then I sacrifice a veteran mounted warrior to destroy the road underneath them, so all non-mounted Ottomans (and so far I haven’t seen any horses) will stop and wait for me to bombard them.

IBT – The Ottomans kill my sacrificial mounted warrior (I kind of hoped he would retreat ).

330 BC – The Ottomans send me 5 targets this time. I should build more catapults – my 28 is not enough since I couldn’t even redline those 5 units. I kill all 5 without casualties, but no elite victories (they are healing) and no new elites.

I turn luxuries up to 40% since my Golden Age is ending, and I have no idea if 30% would still be enough.

I notice that Babylon knows the Aztecs, therefore they should be fighting them. We renegotiate peace and sign an alliance against the Aztecs. They toss in a worker and their 1 coin; I give up Currency putting Babylon in the Middle Ages. I could have given Literature or Monarchy, but I thought I’d save my optional techs in case they would help me buy a Middle Age techs. Babylon got Feudalism free, and I already have that.

IBT – My Golden Age ends. The Ottomans start building Leo’s.

310 BC – The Ottomans only sent 3 units this time – 2 elite wins (11).

To celebrate the end of my Golden Age, my economy has a bit of a problem:

The 252 gpt I’m paying to the Zulu is not quite as affordable as it used to be. Hopefully they will break our deal and declare on me before I run out of cash :please:.

290 BC – I only get to kill 1 MDI in the northern pass this turn – elite win #12. A lone Ottoman MDI approaches my spear wall in the south, so I throw a couple rocks at him, and hopefully he will go away.

IBT – The Russians start the Great Library. The Zulu never even started it. The Zulu are apparently taking quite a beating this game – my military is even strong to them (weak to everyone else), and they only have 13 cities (second fewest is Babylon at 25, and they started on an island, third fewest is Ottomans with 38).

270 BC – The Russians entered the Middle Ages and got Feudalism. Only 1 Ottoman unit again – this is Sid, isn’t it? I should have kept my mouth shut – that ¼ MDI just defended himself and killed a 5/5 elite of mine and then redline a 4/4 vet before finally dying.

250 BC – 4 units from the Ottomans give 2 elite victories (14)

Score at 250 BC = 1822

IBT – Ottomans and Russia sign peace causing Russia to give me my second source of war jollies. Babylon starts the Great Library.

230 BC – Only 3 Ottoman units again this turn, but I have to wonder if the peace with Russia will make them send more toward me. One more elite win (15). There will be a few more units to kill next turn:

As you can see, my settler is now in iron poaching position for next turn.

IBT – The Ottomans kill 1 of the spears guarding my iron settler. The Russians sink one of my 3 remaining curraghs – I may never meet the final 3 tribes. The Ottomans start Knights Templar – I will be seeing knights in the not-too-distant future :hide:.

210 BC – This time I have 10 Ottoman targets. After all my catapults fire, the top 2 units are still ¾ MDI. I am building 2 catapults per turn in my core, so hopefully I can hold out until they get to the front. My 1 healthy elite gets a victory (16), but I lose 2 veterans. I send a couple workers in that direction to build a fortress on that tile in case I can’t keep up with the Ottomans.

I found New Kente to steal the iron. Map Stat gives it a 20-27% chance of flipping. Obviously I am only borrowing this iron temporarily. I upgrade 3 veteran warriors to MDI for my first army (I will get a leader, really) and set core towns to MDI or pikes so I get a few before my iron is gone.

All troops head toward the front. I had been holding many in my core for happiness purposes, but now everyone heads forward partly because I will soon be facing knights, but also because I am going to have to start advancing. I wasn’t planning on advancing until I got a leader, but I have to relieve the cultural pressure so I can keep iron, and I’m almost out of room to settle peacefully anyway. I just leave a handful of mounted warriors behind for amphibious defense and to take the Babylonian towns once they get around to declaring on me.

My core has finally reached size 12 everywhere:

Now I’m short on workers from all the adding I’ve done, but there are plenty of corrupt towns to rebuild a workforce.

You may notice I am also about to go bankrupt – I still have 7 turns of giving the Zulu 252 gpt. As an American, I know the best way to deal with crippling debt payments is to borrow more so I give the Zulu another 88 gpt which gets me a worker (I can’t resist slaves) and 1128 gold. I should now have no trouble staying solvent until that first deal expires.

190 BC – Back down to only 8 Ottomans. Again I only have 1 healthy elite to win (17), but I gain 1 elite with 1 vet lost.

170 BC – Only 1 Ottoman MDI (18). Forces gather near New Kente (but not inside the city :nono:) for an assault on Denizli coming soon. A curragh sees an unknown border!

150 BC – Not a single Ottoman in sight in the northern passage! A single mounted warrior slides one tile northwest and still sees nothing. I guess I will try to make progress in both land bridges :dunno:.

I found Salamanca 2 (twice through the city names so far). The advance stacks:

I really regretted moving the northern stack right after I did it. They can’t do any damage from there – I should have just waited a couple more turns for my pikes to get there. Hopefully it won’t cost much :scared:.

The northern stack is 5 spears, 27 mounted warriors, and 27 catapults. The southern stack to attack Denizli next turn is 4 spears, 20 mounted warriors and 2 catapults (and yes, I still am weak to everyone except the Zulu).

So much going on I almost forget to check out the Mongols. They are up Engineering and The Republic on me. The Ottomans are still the only ones working on Leo’s so the knowledge of Invention is still rare. I build an embassy with the Mongols:

They are already are at war with the Russians and the Aztecs (as am I), but they haven’t realized how evil the Ottomans are yet. I decide to hold off on signing alliances with them for a few turns. I want to buy Engineering for gpt as part of a peace deal/alliances with someone. In 4 turns when my Zulu deal expires, I will have much more available gpt. If the Zulu don’t break our deal, then I will buy Engineering from them. If they do break it, then I will get Engineering from the Mongols.

IBT – The Ottomans do nothing to my northern stack. They attack the southern stack with a knight (retreated) and an MDI (killed a spear).

The Babylonians move a settler/spear pair into my territory from the north, so I can get them to declare anytime I want. It sure would be nice if they showed up with Engineering :please:.

130 BC – I retreat my northern stack. I can wait a couple turns until I can put pikes on top of it. Denizli was guarded by 3 pikes, 2 trebbies, an injured MDI, and a redlined knight. It costs me 4 mounted warriors to raze and gain 4 slaves. Now my iron is flip-proof.

IBT – A knight comes out of the fog in the south to attack a spear then retreat. The Aztecs start the Great Library. The Ottomans are building Leo’s – I could have sworn they were already working on that.

110 BC – This time the Ottomans come at me with 9 units in the northern pass. I don’t have quite enough to redline all of them – 3 still have 2 hps. I lose 1 veteran mounted warrior, and all 4 of my elites get wins (I only have 4? Even promotions are few and far between.). That makes 22 elite wins – where’s my leader???? My first 2 pikemen arrive in the northern fortress – maybe I’ll try moving forward again next turn.

In the south, I kill the redlined knight with a veteran mounted warrior.

IBT – America and Mongols sign an alliance vs. Aztecs. Where is America?

90 BC – The knights are coming, but they choose to avoid my pike in the fortress:

And finally:

My third elite victory of the turn and my 25th overall. The leader forms an MDI army which will head the southern front’s approach over difficult grassland. The northern choke is so good, I don’t think the army is needed there. I optimistically start prebuilding both the Heroic Epic and the Pentagon (I have to get 2 more armies in the next 25 turns, no?).

My stack in Ottoman territory is 2 pikes, 5 spears, 35 mounted warriors, 1 worker and 2 slaves. If all goes well, then I will found a city north of where the settler is now, build a road in the tile that will then be in my territory and destroy the road 1 northwest of there to move the front.

I have to take out a small loan from the Zulu (8 gpt for 112 gold) to keep me afloat for 1 more turn before our major deal expires next turn.

IBT – The Ottomans got all the way to the mounted warriors in my stack and killed a few of them. The stack will retreat again. Zulu and the Aztecs sign peace – the Zulu are war happiness source #3 plus I was still paying them over 90 gpt for the next 14 turns. The Russians complete the Great Library – not all that convenient, but the tech pace has been so slow I don’t care much. The Mongols start Leo’s. The Ottomans complete Knights Templar.

70 BC – The northern stack retreats back to the safety of my fortress. The southern units start advancing under the protection of the army.

I decide the Babylonians' time is up – I don’t want to wait for them to get Engineering. I sign an alliance vs. the Russians with the Babylonians plus they throw in Republic. It costs me only 140 gpt. Then I make Hammi furious and kick out his units, and he declares war. I now have 100% war happiness (of course that doesn’t mean that 100% of my citizens are happy, but the only cities with happiness issues are size 2, 3, or 7 so I just need to maneuver MPs around).

The Babylonian city of Nimrud autorazes, but there was a settler in there for 2 slaves. I also get the settler under the spear for 2 more slaves, and they had 1 worker in the open for me.

It’s time to get Engineering. My military is up to average against the Mongols. I renegotiate peace with the Mongols (can I get more than 100% war happiness? I don’t know, but I doubt it. Regardless, it wouldn’t be bad for the Mongols to declare on me also, so I can sign peace with someone when desirable and keep my happiness). We sign peace and alliances vs. the Russians and the Aztecs (the Mongols would have paid me for those two, but the Zulu and the Ottomans would cost extra so I decided they were unnecessary). The Mongols provide Engineering, and I provide 95 gpt.

I still have 273 gpt, but I have very little to spend it on. My cities are at 15 or 20 spt, so there is not useful way to cash-rush military. I suppose I could use some for marketplaces, courthouses and aqueducts, but I don’t really need many more of them either. My primary expense will be rushing settlers to fill in the Ottoman territory as I raze cities, and I don’t need that much for that.

So I talk myself into buying Invention from the Mongols. It costs me 219 gpt, but I might not even end up paying it if the Mongols break our deals. This way I can keep tabs on Gunpowder, and once I get that from some AI, I will race to cavalry myself. It turns out the Ottomans already have Gunpowder, but I’m not ready for peace with them yet. I haven’t seen any muskets from them, so I guess they lack saltpeter.

IBT – The Ottomans attack my pike in the fortress with a knight, but the pike scared him away. The Babylonians land 2 units near my core. I realize that I could use money to upgrade catapults to trebbies – oh, well.

The Ottomans sent me 17 units, but I only have 2 healthy elites (with no *) and only 1 other injured elite. Both elites get wins, 2 more veterans get promotions, and 2 vets were killed.

Back on the home front, I kill the intruding Bab bowman and warrior without loss (getting a promotion to elite), pick off a newly landed Bab spear/settler pair, and lose 1 mounted warrior razing the Babylonian city of Hindana. My territory is now clear of filthy foreigners:

On the western flank, my army leads 31 mounted warriors into Ottoman territory and can’t find a city:

Score at 50 BC = 2223

IBT – The Babylonians land another 2 units by my core. The Ottomans go 2-1 attacking my fortress with knights – I should make that a barricade unless I think I can push forward soon. An Aztec galley sinks 1 of my remaining 2 curraghs, and I still lack 2 contacts.

30 BC – The Russians show up with Monotheism – I don’t think they had it last turn. There should be several tribes working on Gunpowder.

There are 8 Ottoman units in catapult range. I redline all – 2 elite victories, 0 new elites, and 1 casualty.

Work starts on the barricade – I will add more workers to finish it next turn.

Kill the 2 Babylonians – 1 with an elite.

My army and 31 mounted warriors advances on the city of Iznik. Istanbul is not far from where I am now:

I see America! I found the “American” city of New St. Petersburg . I was all set to move my curragh north, but I can make another contact. I just hope the Russians don’t sink me this turn.

I upgrade 1 cat to a treb in my core before it moves to the front.

IBT – The Aztecs start Leo’s. Ah, the injustice of it all – the Russians do not attack my curragh, but I can’t meet the Americans anyway:

I guess I could meet them if I sink the Russian, but it doesn’t seem worth the risk. Since they didn’t attack this turn, hopefully they won’t attack next turn either. I move my curragh south and fortify – now I just have to remember to wake him up next turn.

The Ottomans lose a knight to an MDI in my fortress and the MDI goes elite.

10 BC – The Ottomans send 12 units. My catapults can’t handle all of them – I redline the pikes and knights in the stack, but the MDI still have multiple hps. The tally - 5 elite wins (1 with the MDI), 0 promotions, and 1 vet lost. Leaders have not come easy this game – it feels like I’ve been very unlucky, but that is “only” 32 elite wins. I only got 1, but I shouldn’t have more than 2 leaders anyway.

The massive battle of Iznik takes place – no bombardment, just countless mounted warriors throwing themselves at pikes; I decided the bombard would move too slowly. My casualties - 6 mounted warriors. Ottoman casualties – 3 pikes, 2 workers and 1 trebbie captured, a city razed (for 5 slaves). I killed the last pike (redlined by mounted warriors) with the army so I can build the Heroic Epic – due in 6.

And I see a source of dyes!

I start to  over the prospect of my very first luxury, but it will probably be too dangerous to claim for a while still.

The barricade guarding the northern choke completes.

IBT – my barricade wasn’t too useful as I lost a pike and a spear and killed nothing. The Ottomans send a bunch of knights down the western choke – that won’t do at all. I’ll have to block up that route somehow. The Russians are building Leo’s. Pre-turn:

The Ottomans send 16 units in the northern choke and a jailbreak to the west. They are probably just after those mounted warriors in no-man’s-land. Once I consolidate them underneath my army, hopefully that approach will be less appealing. But it could be that they are taking that route because of my barricade in the other :hmm:.

My first order of business is to wake my curragh before I forget. He sails south and introduces himself to the Americans. America is still in the Ancient Age

The embassy:

The Americans are at war with the Aztecs and the Russians, and they don’t know Babylon. They are not going to get Gunpowder for me, so I might as well get war jollies from them too. We renegotiate peace, sign alliances against everybody (except the Babylonians who America doesn’t know and the Mongols since I am not at war with them yet), and I give up Currency for their 5 gold and 2 available workers.

Back to the 16 Ottomans in the northern choke: my 46 catapults in the barricade are again not up to the task although they do redline all units with defense of 3. The body count – 5 elite victories, 1 new elite, and 1 vet lost.

All units in the western choke congregate underneath the army on the road blocking easy passage. I take care of the 5 knights that had already passed that point losing only 1 mounted warrior and gaining 1 elite.

10 AD pictures:

(strong to Zulu, weak to everyone else)

I tend to lose track of time while playing . According to MapStat, those 4 turns took me a little under 2 hours.

IBT – The Babylonians land 2 units in my core. The Ottomans are still trying both choke points. The Russians attacked my lone curragh, but it lives and promotes to 4/4.

30 AD – My first galley completes. I’m not sure why I built it or what I’m going to do with it since it will probably get sunk very quickly if I send it out.

There are 9 Ottoman units in the north – all of them were successfully redlined leading to 4 elite wins with no leader, 5 veteran wins with no promotions and no losses.

On the other choke, I kill only the lead Ottomans knight (and get another elite) since without bombardment my odds are not that good. I move all the mounted warriors under stronger defensive units, and hope the Ottomans will not continue this line of attack.

The 2 Babylonians are slain without loss.

It didn’t take the Ottomans long to found a new Denizli.

IBT – Protecting mounted warriors in the western choke worked – all Ottoman units there turned around and headed for the northern choke again.

50 AD – Only 2 Ottomans make it within catapult range – both are killed with elites.

IBT – The Russians start Sistine Chapel. They were supposed to be working on Gunpowder!

70 AD – Four Ottoman units in the north = four elite victories = more nothing. It looks like I’ve shifted calling these fronts northern and southern to northern and western. From now on they will be known as western and eastern because that’s kind of where the fronts are now in relation to each other.

In the west, my army advances again to attempt to raze the reincarnation of Denizli in a turn or two. I found a couple cities on that stretch to keep moving forward. Hopefully they won’t attract the Ottomans back to this side.

I'm pretty sure the land masses are ranked by size. Alpha would be the biggest. You can see what continent each of your cities is on in the Miscellaneous tab, where it shows you the order of the palace jump ranks (top of the screen).

In this game I know just because I know you get 25% from each tribe that declares on you, and I've had 4 tribes declare, and I have had no real fighting with any of them which could cause me to lose it.

The only way I know of to determine how much war happiness you have is by looking at a city of size 4 or larger (below size 4, war happiness has no effect), seeing how many happy/content people I have, seeing how many are accounted for by things other than war happiness (luxuries, luxury spending, buildings, Wonders, MPs, etc.), and whatever is left must be war happiness.

There is an article on war happiness here.

Thanks...when you try to search for "war happiness" or "war+happiness", you are told that the word "war" is too short, and was deleted from your search description. So you just get a search on "happiness" which is 300 pages long...

Chamnix, when I click your Imageshack thumbnails, I get to an Imageshack page without any image. I've tried almost all thumbnails here, same thing happens all the time.

I've had that as well for the last couple of weeks, but refreshing the imageshack page usually works.
