Ok, it was working fine last night, but this morning it won't turn on.
It's a hp g6000.

It's plugged in, an that's blue ( glows blue when power on)
of the three "lights" on the keyboard, the "lightning" power symbol does light up for about 20 seconds then turns off... Normally it would always be on when plugged into mains.

when I hit the "on" button, it glows, up, as do several other things but there is no start up noise at all an after about 3 seconds all the lights go out.

This sucks! Any ideas?

I'll take it to a repair shop later, hoping it's a dodgy "on" button or something, but meh!?!?

If it's initially turning on, I would put a dodgy power button low on the list of problems. Since it appears to be POSTing, I'd have to say it's the hard drive. You could try removing your memory sticks one at a time and see if that helps, but it's been my experience that RAM problems generally stop the boot from the get go.

Eugh, the HD I only replaced about a month ago...

It wouldnt be turning off on its own like that, I would think. Does the screen light up at all?

to test if it's the HD or not, stick an operating system install disc in the drive, see if it boots. Also, it'd give you a BIOS error I think, not just shut down.

No. It lasts a second, if that.

Just gone to the lappy shop. He took about 30 seconds with it and decided the motherboard is fubared. Suggested I sold on ebay as spairs and bought myself a new one :(

I don't think it would be "on" long enough to load a cd!

Motherboard is what I was gonna suggest, if you couldn't even boot a CD. I am much more versed in desktop hardware. Saw you already confirmed that, however.

The guy at the store is right, there isnt much you can do when a laptop blows its motherboard. Not much you can usually replace on a laptop other than memory and hard disks.

However, assuming your laptop's HD is compatible, you can probably install it into another machine, or maybe get a USB external drive kit and recover your data from it.

Also, if you do sell it on ebay, remember that your HD has all it's data on it, so you might not want to be sending it out anyway.

I bought the HD last month.. an upgrade to a 500GB one :(

So yes, definitly taking that out.

As with most things, it depends on how much time and energy you want to put into it. For me, it was, simply because I took retired laptops we have a work and cobbled together the out of warranty systems into usable loaners. So, yeah, it was cost effective for us. But I've also had someone bring me their laptops and replace the mobo because they wanted to keep using the system. It wasn't that old, but out of warranty, and it was cheaper to buy the mobo from ebay and replace it than buying a new system.

A working motherboard from ebay is £60... i'm not comfortable installing it myself, so after labour I wouldn't be surprised if that would cost me ~ £100.

Leads my to consider selling this lappy, as a spairs or repairs (even tho ebay is choc full of these laptops broken.. they seem to be poor for breaking) and buying anew.

I am so hopelessly lost in todays technology. I play games that are about 10 years old (civ 3,Morrowind, Patrician 3) so don't really need modern graphics etc...
