My myserious problem...

Its really wierd and I dont know what caused it, but now once some time has passed my computer comes up with this strange error message, and then generic win services have encountered a problem in a window after that :S ill try get a screenie up soon.


It would be OK, but if I load a game like civ4 after the message has been shown, there is no sound... But if I get there before the message comes, there is.


How can I fix this, any ideas?

I have zero experience with repairing/restoring Windows but I can tell you reformatting your drive will do good

error number, screenshot, etc.

good dthings to do while you get windows related errors are:

run a WINDOWS UPDATE
(open IE > tools > windows updates)
you'll need valid windows licence for that.

windows have loadsof patches, and some make things worse at first, but if you get the latest patch, it should be OK.

another thing is you could have abad install.
did you install a new application recently?
if so,you might try and remove it.
see what happens.

a third, less likely to cause errors, thing is defrag and clean your HD.

if all else fails try REPAIRING your windows install.

Windows is capable of popping up probably a million different error message, many/most of which will look strange to most people.

Information is good.

Try find information about the error in your Event Viewer.

0. Login Windows as Administrator.
1. Go to your desktop, right-click on My Computer.
2. Click Manage.
3. Look at the left panel. Click on the + sign next to "Event Viewer".
4. There will be several sub-categories.
For each one:
5. There are probably a lot of items in there. Right click on the sub-category name, click "Clear all Events".
6. Windows will prompt you to save the current logs to a file. Save if you want.

Now wait until you hit the problem again. Then open the Event Viewer, and for each sub-category, find related log entries according to time (they will be marked as error, with red exclamation signs).

Then you can save the logs and post them here.

ok, i did what KC said to do and then once I did it the error message came up again, I took a scrennie but dont know how to upload it...however, it came up twice, and the winservices window ddint pop up this time.

Windows update is running, I downloaded a different video drive before, to fix problems I had with videos, but it was working fine for a while after that.

the really wierd thing in, I have had this message for a while some time back, but then it stopped happening, and it just started coming up again :\

Some stuf that happens after the error message:

the bar at the bottom of the screen turns from the new kind into the old, blocky, grey one, windows like IE also get the gray blocky tabs and stuff as well. The sound in games goes, but it stays on for things like IE and the desktop.

Eventually, the grey style changes back into the new version, but not always.

Right click on the category on the left panel, and choose "Save Log File As...". The file extension would be .evt by default. Then you can zip the .evt files, and upload it to here, or other file sharing sites (e.g. http://RapidShare.de )

If it's a while since you got the error, the event logs will again grow, so you might want to clear it again and do it all over.

I would upload it, but it said it was an invalid file >_< I cant even open it, when it searched the internet for something to open it, it couldnt find anything... should I save it someplace else perhaps?

CFC has restriction on what types of file you can upload... pack your .evt files inside a zip file and you should be able to upload it.

Failing that, you can always use RapidShare.de...

To open the .evt file, right click on "Event Viewer" in the left panel, and choose "Open Log File...". You will need to specify a correct log type in the dropdown menu.

they have a patch tofix this.
i have had this happen at work quite a lot of time.

try to install IE7, that should do it.
after that just update the windows fully.

if you cant update (eg - unlicenced copy) try system restore to a few daysback.

The error message said nothing other than one of the running programs is getting a Null Pointer Exception... not useful at all for telling what went wrong.

We need your event logs.

At the moment you collected those logs, some of your Windows' DLL files are definitely not right...

All your error logs said something similar to this:

The description for Event ID ( 1000 ) in Source ( Application Error ) cannot be found. The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. <snip>

When an error occurs, a bunch of info are transmitted between modules (e.g. Event ID=1000, module=svchost.exe, etc. in this case). Some of these numbers reference text in some DLL files, and these text will be displayed when you view the event logs. However in your system, those text are not found... thus that message.

I went ahead and checked about EventID=1000 for svchost.exe (the source of almost all of your errors), and found some relevant Microsoft Knowledge Base articles.

Installing IE *might* fix it... IE is tightly integrated with Windows that many system files will be replaced when upgrading. But I'm not 100&#37; sure IE includes that particular fix.

I recommend you follow soul_warrior's advice: Update your windows. It's never a good idea to NOT do so. As those security/bug fixes are released, relevant information about it will be leaked. If you don't patch your system, that particular bug/security leak can be exploited.

After that, keep monitoring your system... if there are any more errors, post your event logs here.

OK, but I dont get what you mean by installing IE, you mean internet explorer tight? If not then what :S the internet is installed and dandy, I have a LAN network, is that of any significance?

Updated windows, whenever I do up date, and start to install the updates, the messages comes again, that important?

Are you saying you still get that error whenever you use Windows Update? If so, take a look at this Knowledge Base article:

I have teh fancy new IE7 or whatever number it is, the one with the tabs

when I run windows update, what happens is once the updates start to install, the error message pops up again, I clock cancel to avoid the feeze.

I didnt actually understand a lot of the link btw ( what is an MSI for example) but this jumped out at me:

the error is an Svchost.exe according to the top of the window that the error message pops up in. I will try get a screenie up, but how do I get a screenie of the desktop?

MSI is the extension for Microsoft's installer.

The Knowledge Base article I pointed out talks about problems with svchost.exe during Windows Update, and according to your last post, it seems to match your symptoms.

So download that KB Fix and run it... scroll down in the KB article and select the one for your OS.

No need for screenshots though... the error message popup doesn't tell a lot. Not even when you click "More Details".

But FYI, if you want to take screenshots of desktop, go to desktop, and press the Print Screen button (usually next to Scroll lock). Then open any image editor (even PaintBrush), open a new file, and paste. If you only want to capture the active window, use Alt-Print Screen instead.
