As the title says, I have been playing CivWorld over the weekend for a bit. I am in game 126, where I joined Germany at the start when it was much smaller than Britain, but turns out to be the juggernaut. I joined game 133 as well, playing with France that is now being attacked by 4 other nations. Below are some of my opinions of the game:
1. Civilization it is not
I don't know why this game is called civworld as it really has very little to do with civilization. Yes, you can play and join a civilization and there are units in the game as well as techs. Many other games have that too though. You own a mere city and then cooperate with others. Teching is very opaque in my mind too. Anyway, I don't feel one bit playing civilization.
2. Team play
That whole cooperation is very fuzzy to me. It seems chat and discussions are almost non existent. I have played other online games where chat and team work were crucial. Maybe it has something to do with time frame. Battles take ages to start and each battle lasts too long as well. I mean if a battle starts in 8 hours, I am surely not online to even follow. What I do is to merely add my units to the battle field. I don't even see a recap of the battle. This is very poorly designed if you ask me, no immersive feeling. Other factors where the team is supposed to work together such as techs and wonders are too fuzzy to be clear. The chat window should be part of the main screen anyway, the way it is designed right now looks really like an alpha version.
3. Mini Games
I happen to like the puzzle game as I like jigsaw puzzles. But, those 3 mini games have nothing to do with civilization and in addition, they get repetitive very fast. The connect roads/rails is most annoying.
4. City design and build up.
Little is explained how one should create a city. Yes, surely people will figure that out and come up with a strategy, however at the moment, there is little to do than build up the bonus buildings to max and watch your minions roam about.
5. Mini competitions
Quite fun as I won the jigsaw competition twice. However, again the reward of winning is not clear to me at all. I got prince and king promotions, but what do they actually do for me is not entirely clear to me.
I think I am almost done with this game and will wait for the final version to check whether it has changed into something closer to a civilization game. I am not interested to spend hours on this game. There are far better online games with teamwork around, with real battles that excite you. Maybe I just lack a better understanding of the game to be so underwhelmed.
