Probably came up here before, but here's my story:

Game runs smoothly until the second one of the other leaders pops up. After such an encounter, the game gets unbearbly slow and choppy. Tried many solutions I found here, but no luck. 71.89 drivers even gave me a bluescreen when loading a new game (!). Was ready to bring it back to the store, except for the fact that copyright laws here make it very hard to return an opened game or CD  , so I'd probably not have had any luck.

Anyway, I worked around this problem by installing FreeRAM XP Pro. Seems like those 3D leaders eat up lots of RAM they don't release afterwards (the greedy bastards ;) ). This little proggie kicks in when your RAM falls under a certain amount and frees up some. I set it to 150 megs which works purdy. And tells us something about how much RAM gets wasted here ...!

Worked for me. I know it's not the end of all fixes, but I
hope it'll work for some of you too. Takes a few seconds every time, but it's better than what I had to do before: save, exit, wait 5 minutes, restart, reload ... until the first 3D leader popped up, then rinse and repeat.

System:

AMD 3000+ on nForce 2
1024 RAM
5900 XT/81.89
Audigy 2

good to see this in a fresh thread, i posted about free ram yesterday, but not nice like this, it im sure, got lost in another thread. been workin for me since the game came out good post caelia

FreeRam XP haven't help me, still BSOD...

one more thing, with a loaded game, the game was unplayable until a civilization destroyed one of my cities, then the game was smooth as desired...until a BSOD....
