Hey everybody this is my tatic-
Build about 20 cities and lots of sttelers to build irrigation and roads
Once these are built built road and irrigation on every square the city can see-
then get railroad and the other irrigation etc
the do it on every square
If you think this tatic doesnt work then here is the proof-
by 2000 ad I had every city above 20 and my highest was nearly 40 and each had soo much production they could build a nuke in one turn and I had every wonder exept the old ones, and you dont get much corruption either- I dont now if this works for civ 3, if ay1 knows plz tell me.

Un fortunately I lost this file whe I re instaled the game and can u give ppl your save files:D

Your signature line is an invitation...

Have you ever landed on AC before 1000ad? Many players have. Railroads and refrigeration? Many players are done before these techs even come up. 2000ad? The game is usually over LONG before then.

Anyway, taunts aside, you are right that population is key to any growth or builder strategy. More workers mean more production, more trade, and higher scores. Post more details, you might find some good insight from other players about your game.

I find that Trade impacts a civ more than Population, but i guess the latter compliments the first

How do you get the cities so high!? My cities get to size 8 and that's it. Then the enemies come and take them. Can you give me some advise please?

Cities need a aqueduct to grow past size 8 and a sewer system to grow past size 12. :p
And of course enough food to fill the food box. Irrigate surrounding squares, be sure to change you government away from Despotism and later build other food enhancing buildings, like harbors and supermarkets.
Don´t forget to defend your cities with units stationed in them. Fortify defensive units in the city and build walls if needed.
Usually the AI is too dumb to really give you any trouble, only the early game is dangerous.

Start with the tutorial and read the manual to learn all this basic stuff.
:D

I knew I should have specified that I want the thread starter to give me more tips, you ruined it Lucky
-booooooooooo-

As far as I know, I think that the greater the population the quicker the advances, the higher the trade, etc.

My strategy is therefore to have each city first build a settler who will build the next city before building warriors or improvements...

Another tip to get more points :
Just one turn before the end of the game (either retirement or Alpha Centauri), have as many settlers as possible build a city. This will grant you 10,000 more inhabitants by city (and with them the corresponding points !)

A better tip than the last one: before you even launch the SS but are satisfied that you have improved the land enough and are ready to launch then found some new cities and get them up to size 3 asap by donation of engineers. Buy them everything they'll need for happiness and growth and sometimes the mass transit to stop points-eating pollution and then celebrate them up to size 14 by the time that the SS lands. :D You will get lots more points from this method than for just one per engineer but it does take longer.

Once you have founded the city you can add extra settler / engineer units until it reaches size 8, as the value of a population unit increases each time, it is better to have 1 city size 8 rather than 2 at size 4. The best balance for use of settler / engineer units is dependent on how many turns are left and your ability to keep these new cities celebrating.

The most benefit will be gained if the units home city is celebrating, that way the spare 2 food that it will gain from the founding of the new city will allow the population to grow from 30-31 eg. thus increasing the pop by a further 310,000 in this eg, in addition to the 10,000 gained from founding that city.

A size 8 city is only better than two size 4 cities in terms of your total population in the demographics. With one size 8 city, you are using 9 tiles and have the chance to celebrate to size 40, but with two size 4 then you are using 10 tiles and can celebrate each to size 40 if there is enough food.
You only get one point at the end for each content citizen, but since you will be running luxuries then your two cities will probably give you more happy citizens with the same luxuries percentage than you'd get with a single city.
Eg: :D:D:):) and :D:D:):) gives 12 points, but
with 2 :Ds and six :)s you only get 10 points.

Err sorru sodak, bout my signature, it is a bit cocky.... and I will change it, only I couldnt think of any thing to put at the start.

ArmOrAttAk - you question as you did want the thread starter to answer -
Well basically you need food to get more popuation and with more population you get more sheilds etc so dont bother too much about founding a city near sheild you want to found a city with about twice as much food as sheilds, thehn you have to irrigate everywhere to get as much food as possible so you can get more population, only the problem comes at 20 b-coz you can only have 20 ppl ,ever, getting food so these 20 have to make alot more food than they need, so if you have a city nearly 40 (I think mine was 36/38) then them 20 ppl have to make as much food as need for all 36 ppl.
Ps Dont forget that sea squares make alot of food I think, Is this right
and will ppl tell me their highest city plz, no lies.
cya

Sea squares do not make a lot of food. They give you one food and two trade arrows at the start of the game, but you will get two food when you build the city a harbour. Compare this to the two food you automatically get with a grassland, which can eaily be improved to three with irrigation. You can't irrigate or farm ocean tiles so two food is the maximum you will get out of non-special sea squares. Ideally, you want a good mix of food and production squares but trade becomes more and more important as the game goes on so you will also need some special squares with extra arrows, some sea squares, or start to put roads on your ordinary land.

As previously posted
The best balance for use of settler / engineer units is dependent on how many turns are left and your ability to keep these new cities celebrating.

You cannot celebrate each to size 40 regardless of how much food there is if you only have 5 turns till your spaceship lands. When I stated that 1 city at size 8 is better than 2 at size 4, I am looking at the shorter timescale, whilst factoring in the possibilty of food availability and keeping the city celebrating.

Naturally, you can only play it as you see it mat the time.

Even so. If you have 5 turns left and a size 8 city then it will be size 13 by the end of the game. With 2 cities of size 4, they will both be size 9 by the end of the game. Even assuming that all of these citizens are content (rather handily ignoring the fact that you are celebrating these cities up), then the difference is 5 extra points. It would be foolish to have two size 4 cities if you chose to stick one in the mountains, but on good ground then you need as many cities over size 3 (and therefore celebratable) as possible.

Kovalie, you seem new to this forum. A tip is to check out the old threads in this forum. I had just moved up to warlord when I began reading in this forum, now I win at Deity:) I'm not a big trader (never built caravans before), and hardly ever get my advances down to 1/turn, but thanks do this forum I'm getting there.

So, check out this forum, and you'll see that a lot of other players have tactics even better than yours:)

funxus - absolutely right, I a new and how do u get your status up (deity etc) and sorry I dont play on civ 2 anymore I am on civ 3 but I think that I would do alot better on civ 2 nowadays,
Kovalie

Do you people recognize This dude came in here spouting big sht. Was pretty funny doing it too. I tried to keep him going but some people I reckon never read a name on a thread, just post post post no bother reading blah
This could've been a great comedy thread -sigh-
Here's a tip for all of you...
When you want to found a new city: just press "b" button on your keyboard (when it's the settlers turn of course) VOILA. You don't have to click orders!

I can get past size 8, but size 12 seems to be my cap ;)
Also - what's this thing I hear about irrigating and building roads?

Roads and Irrigation increase overall productivity of nearby cities, I don't see how you can get to a population of 12 without them

wow...I was kidding, but thanks anyway...
