In Windows (XP - and it was similar in earlier versions - Vista is probably also similar) right-click on "My Computer", and select "Properties" from the popup. That will show you your ram and processor. It also has a "Hardware" tab, which contains a link to the Device Manager.
In Linux, the GUI method varies, depending on your distro and desktop environment / window manager, but the directory "/proc" contains lots of useful info.
you can also go to start>run>dxdiag ( or type in dxdiag in the start menu search ).
There are also other great tools such as CPU-Z which will tell you everything about your cpu, a lot about your RAM and your Motherboard. Everest Home Edition is probably the most comprehensive out of all of them. It will tell you everything about your system.
