Naming the Elite Unit that spawns a ML

In short: how do you do it? What is your "scheme" there and where do you draw your inspiration from? Also, do you name other units too?

When I began playing civ3 and I spawned my first leaders I'd usually rename the unit. After a while it gets boring and most of the time I don't bother renaming anything. In a multiplayer game I'd rename units as a joke and the joke would probably be a non civ3 related reference, but any renaming I personally do would not be relevent to whether a military leader was spawned or not.

Recently I have taken to using the format '*Cavalry_1860AD.x*', with the first unit being either 0 or 1 (depending if I have been programming in Java recently :crazyeye:)

(Note: Java numbers many things beginning at 0 instead of 1.)

Once a unit promotes to * status, it gets retired from battle (usually) but is still called on from time to time to quiet down a just conquered and crabby city.

I just tag on the date spawned, the war I got the MGL from, and the location. E. G. 690 AD Greek War near Thermopylae.

Depends on the unit and the name of the ML spawned. If cavs or horsemen, then something like "Ajax's Riders" or "The 1st Elite Riders." Same thing with the infantry.

I just give the unit a capital "L" before or after it's regular name, if I do rename it. Since I upgrade units a lot, it can be a pain to keep typing out the name, because the game wont change the unit's name once it's been renamed, so I try to keep the name brief.

That does sum it up quite well. The renaming can be a bother, especially when you don't feel creative. I still rename them, but my naming is more of a timestamp than anything else.

Which seems so lame...

I just tag a number after the name. If it was a second or third time that unit made a leader I append. So I can see that sword make a leader and then again as an MDI or whatever tyoe that it had become.

Depends how I feel, what civ I am, and so on. Recently in the Sengoku conquest, my first leader-spawning unit (a Bushi) was renamed Flash. He was a Grandmaster, so, you know, Grandmaster Flash.

I name a lot of units. I usually have at least one general per war front. My officers get *'s for each x number of cities they conquer, and 5 stars = rank upgrade. So I might have "3rd General Manwel****" (commands the 3rd army, 4 promotions). I usually have a field marshal or some such that oversees all of the armies.

Rarely some unit will perform a very heroic act and get promoted. The name depends on the civ and my mood. It might be "Ivan the Terrible," or simply "Capt. Howard." For Germany I tend to use the wiki.

I think once I or twice I used a plural name, such as the "Bloody Boots" brigade.

I used to rename every unit, depending on army and purpose, such as "3rd Army Heavy Infantry," or "4th Mountain Division." This can be very time consuming if you are popping 50+ units a turn. I wish stacks were renamable as a single unit.

When I was first playing Civ III I would sometimes get mad at how long it could take to receive a leader. I could be at war for hundreds of years and conquer whole continents and still not get one.

So I usually named the guy 'About ****ing Time'.

Sometime I use the leaders name-more often I use some variation of Guard-such as 1st Guards Swords-or Old Guard Cavalry. I am playing the Zulus now and am using names like Royal Impi-I often stick such units in an Army and then name the Army something like Guard Infantry. I go pretty over board with naming units.

I usually name them after the leader that led the battle. So Legionary of Trajan, or Horseman of Hadrian, or so forth.

I rename all of my units to the usual xth Armored Division and such. When a unit pops a leader then the unit would then be called xth Armored Division (Leader Name).

Am I missing something? Is there a reason one should rename them?
Nyah, you don't have to. An elite unit that produces an MGL will have an asterik next the unit name. However, that asterik is very easy to overlook. Renaming such a unit will make it less likely that you will try to use it again to get an MGL, which it can't do a second time until you upgrade it.
