Naval Commanders

However, odds are JC is going to DoW us in some time,

If you think so, then we MUST get a small skirmish in FIRST. Otherwise he will stretch the war over a long time and hit us with everything when co-ordinated.

I have a small skirmish plan for a quick (small strike) for some 100% success....

  1. Move warrior out of Parthenon city THIS turn, head him toward the plains-hill Julius is roading.
  2. Switch parthenon to Charriot now and db-whip (Yes I know a about the penalty!)
  3. Next turn move warrior closer again to plains hill...
  4. Move chariot into position to hit the axe-man in his 1-pop city.
  5. On the third turn, we DoW and move warrior onto the plains-hill (capturing his worker).
  6. Charriot hits axe-man for 100% bonus & auto-razes his 1-pop city...
Julius should (hopefully) want peace in a few turns, and won't be able to land much a force at all within that time... Worse comes to worse we can gift a tech or so...

BTW, does -1 for razing a city still count if it is an auto-raze? I think so, but it almost feels wrong in a way since the attacker never has an actual decision in the matter.

I queued Philosophy but we might want to change this.

The big problem is no one wants to trade techs with us, except for the worse enemies on the board to everyone else.... go figure.

I would REALLY like to hit CS real quick with our monster capital...

CoL --> CS sounds interesting, but the God Damned AI's refuse to trade the laws... which means even more over-teching... If we gift surry Aesthetics this turn we could get him to +4 but he's still not going to want to make trades....

Ok, we can improve on our DoW plan even more...

Double-whip a sword in our capital THIS turn (yes, I know if feels wrong).
Next turn move him into galley (other sword is already in it). Sail down.
When we DoW the turn after, move the galley next to Xian, and unload directly into the forrest.

Julius is defending at only 20%, on flatland. Furthermore, he has no protective or barracks, so we SHOULD have a hay-day. Yes, we will have 2 swords defending vs 3 archers since he will no doubt WHIP one, but we are charismatic so each sword will be promote to CRII on the second wave, so we should be able to go for a quick knock-out of that city.

Before we GIFT his horsehockey city back, whip the pop down. I suggest, whip christian missionaries. If we spread it to our capital, this blocks it from getting auto-spread to our other cities, increasing chance of getting Hindu instead. Also, there is a chance Julius builds the AP.

So, best result is we auto-raze 1 city, steal another city, and steal one worker. We also have a decent chance of doing this with 0 losses, but causing 5 or so unit-losses for Julius. We gain some gold and other benefits like EXP in the process. His base RTT will be cut in half and we buy ourselves much greater time before HE dows on us at his own leasure.

Other thoughts....?

Will comment once I have the save (at work right now), though it seems risky to me. If one of our initial swords fails (u never know when the RNG will screw u), we are in dire straits.

Also JC (having four galleys in Rome) can land 8 units 3 turns after our declaration.

Well the point is, if we don't DoW first, he will DoW and put us in much worse situations...

It's a classic case of gilga next to you and going wehorn, you have no choice but to instantly DoW on him before he gets his army in position, even if you can't do anything at that moment. Otherwise, you spend the next thousand years in a war and he refuses to talk.

Xian is a bit of a risk, our CR words will be around 70% to win due to the archers fortified. 6.00 vs 4.95....

The bigger risk is Julius getting SMART... and whipping something like an axe or walls. We can always abort the seige if he does something smart or things go bad. But the longer we wait to DoW the worse we'll be facing when Julius DoWs...

So I don't know... we could wait to what.. build a bigger army... to face a bigger one.. and possibly longbows? Then what...

Maybe shift the Galley to our West around to the East... then time things to hit with 4 swords?

Alright, I have also another alternative plan. Julius is not building triremes. We could tech MC for 1 turn, then trade for it next turn to one of the AIs (risk of getting -1 diplo worst enemy though).

Our forges are only half price, and will give us +2 happy with our current resources, so the sooner the better. Our whipping/build power will now shoot up to another level.

We now forget about needing so many ground units. We instead build a few 3-movement triremes, and lay in wait. If Julius doesn't attack... great. If he does attack... great.

Our war success with a successful ambush SHOULD go right through the roof, and hopefully Julius will be begging for peace soon after.

Note: MC also puts us up very close to unlocking our UU.

I am fine to stall the war a bit and go for triremes then... (I think?)

Also, our capital is losing food! Perhaps we should trade our horses to Surry for 1 fish & 1 happy resource. The problem is that it could bite us if surry just makes mounted units to attack us with (wink).

So, if we go this route, I guess keep spamming settlers, etc. with the capital (try not to whip it if possible). We have a 60% chance in a few turns to finally get our academy up.

When we get our forge up, we can also run one more (decent) specialist too.

After the MC trade, I'm still not sure what tech to jump onto if nothing changes.... we can re-evaluate at that point if suddenly someone else wants to trade other techs.

I like the MC plan. Sounds safer and funnier than gambling on two single fights. IT has other advantages than just the military also.

If we can't trade without diplo hits, i am for col -> CS once we get MC. Once we get CS, hopefully we will be hindu so we can sell it to backfill somemore.

I can't play before several hours though (edit: scratch that. can't before tuesday )

edit: @Obs: btw iam not saying we shouldn't attack! I perfectly got why we have to (unless we get lucky and Fred is the target)

I doubt we will be the first to CS, and murphies law means we probably won't get Hindu, because it is a Majority. But lets see...

I am all for running a golden-age on our run toward CS.. if we time it so we still have 1 turn left after CS...to do the free switch into Beuracracy... Though it's probably best to hold onto it until we have CS completed (unless we get hindu spread by then.).

Too bad we couldn't trade for (calendar) Mauosolous (WTH you call it)... we could put OF into that each turn and who knows, get lucky again.

^^ Hehe loving this wonder too. If we can have CS in a timely manner without, It's sure best to wait for it to start the GA to get the bonus commerce/prod through the additional multipliers.

That is a bit over-estimated... because it will take longer to get to CS that way, and you lose all the extra stuff that you would have had getting there sooner. It also means we won't be getting the great people generated as soon either...

Anyway, I am still dumb-founded on where to put the HE. There was an old trick of putting the HE in the Globe city, to get the 100% on the whip hammers. But as a general rule of thumb, I always prefer the draft there. But then you lose CS for the capital...

You know....

Doing some math... we could build the Mausoleum in the capital in around 6 turns (after forge is done)..... :P

RRR where are you...

Kossin, did you want to take over perhaps...

Well really sorry Obsolete, couldn't free up myself this evening. Tmr for sure (go ahead a bit if one of you can play before that...)

Ok, so I played on a bit more then...

Traded for MC (1 turn research)... traded for Philo, and also currency. Only got a -1 worst enemy penalty on Saladin. So I think we came out ok.

Julius building a huge naval invasion, and it turns out his major city on our continent only had a single archer defending it (grrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!) I really wish we had carried out my first plan, especially since Surry just changed to Christianity too.

Oh well, what is done is done. I was going to sail to Iron island, but Japan already set up house there, so I planed down another city at the Jem island. I had to abort taking the barb city because for some reason..... there is a stack of axes in there. How did that happen... Bull 1.2 patch doing something funny I guess.

We have to abort our trireme plan, Julius keeps out-producing us, I guess it is time to go for axis for defense.

Anyhow, CS is researched, so starting this turn I think it is time we run the golden age and flip into CS. We also kept getting screwed by the RNG and failed to generate a scientist for our academy all this time (go figure).

Next turn our settler for our sixth city is done, we should stop with the settlers at that point, and focus on defense + getting our globe ready. Any other cities we grab should be done by military force.

Do not forget when you see Julius sail his invasion out, to beg for 1 gold, do the same if Surry shows up with a SoD also.

So.... what now.

P.S. Silly me, I FORGOT to build cottages yet again! God damnit! Whooooops....

Please change Parthenon city so it works the two mines of 1f3h so that it grows 1 pop next turn.

Also, if we start a GA this turn, switching into CS, then we should have 115 hammers to put into a building next turn (99 of 100 hammers on settler). Please do NOT build a barracks next turn, or we will lose hammers to that utterly stupid OF bug some geniuos created.

Feel free to build an aqueduct (1 turn) so we don’t bleed off food if you want. It would also be nice to get a temple to run another priest at the next pop level. Though I don’t want to stall the barracks & defense units too long. I think we are going to need more axes than swords now since we’ll be fighting vs. stacks and not taking cities it seems…

In our new & horsehockey cities, work on theatres now. We need to get our 6 up and ready soon so we can get the globe up.

Looking at your last screen, we will be fighting chokonuts... I will post a serious plan in few hours after looking at the save but I fear axes won't do much good for us!
