To reproduce this bug: Have a naval unit (mine was a battleship) linked (escort) with a great admiral. Right-click to move the battleship to a tile very far away, or on the other side of a landmass.
Instead of going along ocean and coastal tiles the path finding will choose to spend 30+ turns going on the land as opposed to 10-12 turns by sea. Obviously the ships can't go on land but that does not stop it from trying.
When not linked together both the naval unit and admiral path find as expected through the water.
 
Apologies for resurrecting a 4-week old thread (the search function worked well :smug:).

I am also having the exact same issue. I would also add that the Great Admiral usually ends up also removing itself from the escort formation.
