In multiplayer I find that naval combat can get very silly. You cant escort land units since you cant stack, and worse, the player who attacks first win pretty much always win. I know this comes up with ranged units on land, but all naval combat seems to depend entirely on ping. Are they're any strategies that can be used in multiplayer to help negate this if you should have the worse ping?

One thing that can and should be done to prevent this type of situation is build a bigger navy and make the first attack. Also encircle your land units with a ring of boats, if possible 2 deep. Your first task for a naval invasion should be to try to eliminate the opponents navy. Once you do this you can blockade naval cities to prevent boats from reaching your units.

All true, its just tough when say they have the great lighthouse or have the policy for more movement and sight, or so help me both, and see my caravan with a caravel, when I had no idea they were even there. Ive lost a few armies this way. Its very hard to determine if youve wiped out an enemies entire navy. Even encircling isnt really and option becuz u can only move one unit at a time, unless you make an oval to envelop both turns worth of positions. Either way, thats a giant navy.

Good news is they can only take out one unit at a time with that a caravel. Yes, until you get that navy wiped out and blockade the cities you should refrain from sending the ground units if possible.

As for the great light house and commerce +1 movement policy, if you are intending to do a naval invasion or have a naval war you should definitely have the commerce movement.

I will say that england with lighthouse and commerce +1 movement is quite dominating and can be scary.

That being said I think commerce is an underrated policy tree that if used correctly can be quite overpowering with the right combination of other policy trees.

Looking forward to playing you again sometime Matt. Of whom I assume you are Matt in NQ group and on my friends list.

I joined this thing the other day to make a point about something and I have almost 2 times as many posts as you! (even though at least 6 were deleted I would say, but that is neither here nor there)

I don't know that I will be able to play again til Sunday, but maybe we can get a game going then?
