Need a KISS list for setting up multiplayer for the first time

A lot of googling has left me with a bunch of links but they all assume I know all sorts of things about Steam, Civ V and computers that I don't.

Can someone point me to a step by step list of how to set up a MP game?

I have gotten to the place where I set the options and invite a friend.

OK, he is on the list--now what? I save the game, but how do I start it? If I back out To the first menu and choose MP, I have to start all over.
If I save the game and then load it again (going back to the screen that allows this) my set up is there but my friend is not. Also with the game loaded, I see no way to actually start it.
Any help would be appreciated.

When your friend and you are in the game, you dont hit save. You click the check mark to the right of your username and civ you selected. Your box will turn green. Once you and your friend are green, or ready, the game will start a count down and when it gets to 0 the game will begin.

To reload later, you have to load up the game, and re invite your friend, else the AI will take over for him. Then you have to hit the ready button and the game will start/continue.
