I downloaded EB 1.1 and 1.2, ran the .exe, and it played the vanilla version! On inspection of the shortcut, it's just an RTW shortcut with -show_error on the end - can anyone help sort it out?

Don't be discoruaged by the size, a few bits are overly cautious (I always leave my anti-virus on, never had a problem (AVG Free), but it doesn't hurt.

OK, it now runs but nothing works - all the units in custom battles are really small, and I get a crash when I try to run anything. Do you know what is wrong with it?

You sure the Trivial Script is working right?

I dunno enough about the nuts and bolts of the game to be able to say, you could try asking bovi over at TWC or the Guild.

Try uninstalling everything then reinstalling.

I recommend using the money cheat once at the beginning if you are having trouble, the game doesn't give you very much money to start off with.
