So I just got back into Civ, and I'm having trouble learning to play. I used to play on Noble mode (nothing much) and I want to know any more tips/tricks on getting better. My Goal is to beat a game at the highest level, and just overall get better at Civ. I've only beaten a game on settler so far, so I think you might consider me a n00b

Step 1: the in-game tutorial
Step 2: the War Academy
Step 3: more refined tips ad hoc from power players like Sisiutil, TMIT, et al.

Specific questions are more likely to get a quick and direct answer here.

Does the tutorial even mention cottages? Either way it's outdated for BTS, which is what most people on the forums will be giving you advice from.

I'd advise you post one of your save files or pictures of a game over at S&T and let them look over it. They'll be able to help you over there.

Read through the war academy, there are tons of good articles over there. Sistuil's strategy guide here is a good read. I would advise building 1.5 workers per city, escort your settlers, and don't automate said workers. Land is power, so don't go for every single wonder(i.e Chichen Itza, Hagia Sophia, and others should be ignored) and instead build more military/settlers. Always make sure there is food in a city's BFC(the 20 tiles it can work) and use decent city sites. Expand to at least 6 cities, preferably more, and choose a financial or creative leader(willem van orange or Huyana capac). Also, get BUG/BAT mod here, it really helps.

Use Specialists. Pericles is great for getting an early library-->running 1 or 2 Scientists-->first Great Scientist. Get a GS early and make an Academy in your top research city (usually your capital). Use Great Engineers produced from Forges to rush wonders you're late at getting to. They are great in that they allow you to catch a wonder even if you start late.

Use Great Artists for border fights, or great a Great Work in a recently-captured city to expand its borders and end revolt. Great Prophets are pretty useless except for researching techs unless you have a holy city to build a shrine. Settling Great merchants yields and extra food and six gold, which is good for an expanding city and also for keeping your treasury balanced. Trade missions are usually the best, though.
