I can not seem to choose a Large or Higher Land mass, I can only play Standard or lower. When I choose the higher ones it crashes back to the desktop after it says it is done loading. Does anyone know why it is doing this or how to fix it?

THANKS!!!!
Amanda:)

Load Patch V1.52 - if still issues - come back here and post your Dxdiag dump

Either:
1. Play at 800x600 (not sure if Civ4 supports this though).
2. Reduce everything to low.
3. Hadoken's memory hack might help a little.
4. Make sure you have 1.52.

 Ok cant do 1, when I reduce everything to low nothing works, and I have installed the patch and now get more errors.

:nuke: FATAL_ERROR

I'm in the same situation - apart from a different line... Patch 1.52 is installed; Laptop w/768 MB memory, Pentium M 1600, 64 MB ATI Radeon Mobility with latest driver update. Funny thing is that it only started to crash yesterday after 6 days with no problems...
I'm late in the game - 1600 AD - on a huge map; medium graphics at 1400x1050/32bpp. I've tried lowering the graphics but to no use; I've reinstalled; I've changed the .ini file as suggeste by Dracodar(?) in another posting; I've tried everything! And the problem is still there... :crazyeye:

Any ideas anybody? Is it my PC or is it the game? BR, Soeren

Do you guys have any mods installed? Made any .ini changes prepatch? I had the exact error, solved it by uninstalling and reinstalling game. I'm guessing either the Blue Marble mod or the .ini tweaks I made with the 1.09 patch were conflicting with the new patch.

Same problem here - I tried uninstalling and reinstalling/patching/etc with no success. I am getting this error message every 5 to 10 minutes making the game completely unplayable. It would appear to be a problem with the game as the error occurs in a c++ file within the game directory and the c++ compiler. It's just a guess and I haven't touched c++ in years, but it would appear that they (take 2) are not handling the objects in memory correctly, leading to this memory leak. I'm guessing that depending on your amount of video ram and the settings you have selected with in the game may be the determining factor in which line it fails on. Still a theory as I have to test the game out with a few older windows patches to see if one of MS's recent autoupdates is the culprit. It could also be a bad install of direct x I suppose since the file name suggests it has something to do with Direct x.

Maybe I'll try that one next - I'll uninstall my direct x and reinstall Civ4 with it's version of direct x (both are 9c). Maybe Take 2 has something "special" included in their executable. At this point, who knows?

I have installed the patch, uninstalled and reinstalled, updated my ATI All in wonder 9000 drivers, and now I get the black map with only the settler pop-up for a few secs then it crashes my computer. I was able to play before I updated with the patch and my ATI drivers just not on the large and huge maps, now I have more problems than I started with..THIS SUCKS!! I have no mods or hacks installed I tried them all and nothing has worked. By updating my ATI drivers I was able to get to a large map but as I said now I have the black map problem and I am not sure how to fix that to now.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Have you tried this?:

Another option is to try different drivers. I'm not an ATI owner, so I can't help you much there, but see if ati.com has an archive of older drivers or search at guru3d.com. The newest driver is not always the best driver for everyone's PC. Some work much better or worse than others.

It may get you running, but I still recommend a new card. You can get a huge upgrade for so little cash. I'd recommend you get either a nVidia 6600 or an ATI 9800, X600 or X700 (all can be had for $100 or less). While the ATI 9000 meets basic specs, in theory, you're never going to get quality play out of it.

I have DirectX 9 installed and works great with all my other games just not this one...so I am a little confused here.

Civ 4 is a demanding and poorly coded game, it's going to cause problems until everything is fixed by the developer. Many of these problems can be exacerbated by older and odd hardware configurations. Right now, even though it says a 64MB card is fine, I simply don't believe it and I won't until all the teething issues are solved. Civ 4 is just too picky about which setups it will run well on.

Reducing to 8x6 will reduce the load on the GPU, but it will not reduce memory requirements. Your other 3 recommendations are dead on.
