How have other people done with peace "negotiations"?

My favorite tactic is starting a war with a nation and driving them to the point they are willing to pay me for peace.

One time with the French I went to war with their 30+ cities and left them with around 10 before I negotiated peace. They paid me their treasury, something like 150 gold, plus 35 gold per turn. For some reason I have always been able to get the French to pay me not to go to war no matter what the situation.

With the Iroquois I didn’t want to share the continent so I started a war and brought them down to 4 cities from 20+, the 4 they didn’t have on the continent. In return for peace they gave me their treasury, about 60 gold, and 2 of their 4 remaining cities.

I would love to know if I am doing well or not getting enough in my negotiations compared to others. I would love to hear some stories.

I just got done with a skirmish with the chinese. I attacked with about 150 modern armor, including seven 4 unit armies. I softened them up with 50 or so stealth bombers and just rolled over them. In about 5 turns I took over all the territory they had taken from the russions and the french. They were down to about eight cities by then and I sued for peace and got all the money they had and 6 of the 8 cities as part of the deal. I figure I'll let the sweat for a few turns and let my war weariness recover a bit and then take them out.

In my current game, I have a city on the border which blocks Zulu from going into my territory without occupying it. I built Wall and put many defensive units in it. Then I declared a war. After Zulu drew all their offensive units to the city and died there, I negotiated with them. I got about 5 Advances! From that I found a way to play Deity game. Now Japan is technology advanced with about 5 Advances I don't have. So I'm doing the same on them. I'll get these Advances today or tomorrow.:)

You can always renegotiate peace, even as a pacifist. I currently get 10gold/turn from the Aztecs. Renegotiating peace cancels all other contracts, though.

Another tip:

Sometimes you need to go to war for something like a resource, or you just really want to take out a couple of non-defended cities, but you really don't have the forces to sustain a long war. After taking what you want, when you sue for peace, it is likely that you haven't weakened the AI enough to get them to pay for peace. What I'll usually do, even if they'll take a peace treaty for free, is I'll pay them 1 gold / turn for peace. That way in 20 turns if I am stronger then them, they will be willing to pay me for peace. If I had not paid the 1 gold / turn I'd have to go to war again to get any money out of them, and 1 gold / turn is not a lot to pay. It also helps to stack a lot of troops on the border when the 20 turns is almost up, that way they'll be more scared and willing to pay you.

Provoke, Conquer and Sue for Peace underfavorable terms.

Sometimes the fortunes of war bring you more than you can handle, with corruption and cities reverting and all; so razing a city seems like a good option.

But, I have found with the less vindictive AI --- like Egypt, the Iroqois, the French etc, ---- that you can trade the cities you conquered from them back under favorable conditions like Civ Advances, Money or much needed resources/ trade items.

I have not used this strategy enough yet to list a bunch of helpfull guidlines, but I am curious to know if anyone else out here has tried this tehcnique.
