In a couple of weeks, my service contract with AT&T will expire. When I renew my contract with AT&T, I'll finally have the chance to replace my old phone. Do you have any recommendations? Keep in mind that I'm hoping not to pay too much because I'm renewing my contract.

Im loving the Sony Ericsson k800i

3.2 camera, radio, mp3 player. Makes calls too.

Depends what you want it for though. Horses for courses and all that.

I went with the Nokia that was free with my contract and am pretty happy with it.

I don't care much for taking pictures and playing MP3... so I might not be typical.

Demand they give you a free iphone!

Hoping for something no bigger than a keyring, I bought the smallest phone I could find... it is not small enough :(

The Chinese make them upto four times smaller (99% LCD), making us look neolithic.

Yeah, I'm dreaming of a house built out of those ;)

Nokia 1100. Very basic (not colour, no pictures etc) but it survives anything.

Mine has:

- Been dropped in a rock pool
- Been hit by a wave
- Been dropped 2 meters onto solid rock
- Been dropped in snow
- Been dropped in cider

And yet it still works. Plus it's cheap.

I have the Cingular 8125. It's a lot better then an Iphone, and thats the old phone. It has a touch screen just like the iPhone. The new one is the AT&T 8525. It uses the G3, so internet is something like 6 times faster over the old EGDE network (what the iPhone uses). (G3 is new and not up everywhere). you can play movies and music great. I hook up a GPS receiver and load maps in to it. So now its a GPS too.

I only have a 2 gig SDmini in my phone now. but some people have said that with the 8525, a HCSD mini works too. What would mean you could get a max of 32 gigs in your phone. But HCSD is new and only making 8gig cards now.

Same here. I have a phone for calling, messages and phone book. I have a Nokia 3510i which I got for free, and I:

- (accidentally, of course) dropped it from a 15 meter tall rock
- dropped it in the water
- recharged it against all the rules and guidelines given
- I have it for 2 years (and I dropped it very, very often by mistake)

And the battery still lasts over 12 days and it barely has any scratch. Still, it's not what most people would go for, as it doesn't have anything else than a color display and the basic functions of a phone.

15 meters? I've gotta try that...

I have a cellphone to make phone calls and, secondarily, to take photographs. I don't need an MP3 player, internet access, or any of the other features that are being crammed into phones these days. As such, a small, good-looking phone is what I'm looking for. Looks aren't a huge factor, but I've found that a lot of cell phones look horrible, and I don't want something that I use as often as a phone to be annoyingly ugly.

The Sony Ericsson K800i is interesting because it's small, looks good, and has a very nice camera. It's expensive, though, and I'm not looking to spend that much money on a phone.

Right now I'm thinking about getting a Blackberry Pearl, which I can get for free with a new contract. If I don't buy any of the Blackberry services (which I won't), then the phone will cost as much per month as my old one does. The reason this phone is nice is that it's particularly small and light, has a pretty nice camera, and doesn't look bad at all.

Thanks for the advice everyone, and don't hesitate to keep posting ideas :). I won't be able to actually buy anything until the 17th.

The problem with wanting half decent camera is that without a lense cover they are fairly useless, and the covers only really come on the higher end Ericsson and Nokia's. Try for something with a cover. A cheap lense not covered in pocket fluff, tobacco and dust will take a better picture than a nice lense covered in gack.
