New CIV III Patch for mac v1.17g

It works fine for me so far--I was getting crashes from the diplomacy screen: not now. Also, the game is much smoother, although I turn off the music when playing mid/late game on a large map. There is not such a "lag" between turns. Very smooth download and install (all the way to Australia via slow 28800 connection to iMac 500 DV SE).

Finally, edited games on the PC can be played on the Mac. Now, if only we could get an editor too... and if they would solve that problem of inability to place starting points for civilizations and give us back the robust editor found in Civ II i think we will have a game here...

I've been working on the Mac editor for about the past month. Hopefully before too long (a month or so), it'll be in a releasable state.

Brad,

What is your take on the whole tech rate / exchange issue? Are you at liberty to comment? It appeared to me during my short experience w/ v1.17f that I had no opportunity to capitalize on my UU (Legionaire). I'm not bashing. I love this game.

Let me give you a more general answer: I know they're working on another patch for the PC app, so I wouldn't be surprised to see this addressed then. The impression I get is that this game will probably be patched for some time to address balancing and gameplay issues as well as your garden variety bugs.

Hey Folks.

Just curious. Am I completely off my rocker, or did I see the addition of "Stack Movement" to Civ3 in one of the latest patches?

Does this mean that I can now take a stack of, say, 5 workers, and move them all at once? This would be great!

If this is the case, could someone tell me how to do it?

Thanks!

I too am hugely interested in this feature for stacking units. I have tried and tried and have been unable to make it happen.

Also, is there some trick to rushing a forbidden palace with a Great leader? I have one in a town, with a forbidden palace being constructed, and I have can't get the advisor to let me hurry it.

To rush build w/ a GL, one needs to use the buttons in the lower center of the screen when the GL is active. Simply hover the cursor over the buttons and a text will appear explaining each buttons function. Make sure the GL is in the city that is building the GW.

Stacking works great since the patch. Just get your bunch of units together and "unwakened" on the same square, press "J" (for Juliet) on your keyboard and select the square you wish them to move to. They then take off--just like the annoying opposition Spearmen/Settler guys who wander through your territory from time to time. Did it recently with a horde of Japanese Samurai and was quite taken by the 'cuteness' of it all.

I find the stack movement to be half way borken for me. I had seven workers in a city with a galleon. I loaded four into the boat and then wanted to do stack move to irrigate.with the remaining three. I ended up with all 7 workers moving to irrigate and nothing in the galleon.

Has anyone else seen this behavior? It seems if a unit has a movement point left, it will follow along with the stack. I will try to test this with fortified units too (I would like fortified units to stay behind if I do a stack mov't).

My understanding of stack movement is that it takes all units of the same type (fortified or not) and moves them where you say. So, in a boat, it will choose them. If you had moved the boat first...

That sounds like the behavior of stack movement to me. The boat was out of moves at the time. Some commands have a shift modifier to change the nature of the command ('A', shift + 'A'). Perhaps a shift + 'J' could, in some way, modify stack movement to let the player have more control. Shift + 'J' could, for instance, ignore units set to fortify, sentry, and loaded in boats. This way if you have just captured a city and have 10 rifleman in the city, you could fortify 2 or three and make them your garrison and then stack move the rest to your next target. Otherwise you have to move each one individually. I don't believe this would complicate stack movement too much.
