new Cottage -> Town structure

I'm making a mod that introduces slower growing cottages. I've managed to change the XMLs to modify the civics so that those affecting towns affect my new towns. However, all of my new cottage -> towns remain the same size in the game (ie they look like cottages). I'm not that worried about that.

The question I do have is that I cannot seem to modify the actual yield coming from towns when running free speech or emancipation. What am I missing?
 
I would say that if it looks like a cottage, it is a cottage, i.e. not a town or village or hamlet. I think that would also explain why free speech and emancipation wouldn't affect it.
 
no - the yields are for a town (4 commerce when not next to river). And the printing press tech impacts the replacement towns and villages. The hover says its a village and shows the correct growth speed. Something else is going on.

So the yields are for a town, the hover says it's a village, and it looks like a cottage? That's messed up. :lol:

Is it possible there's an interaction of multiple issues?
 
yes - I used the civics xml file to introduce a totally new cottage -> town scheme. Everything changes (names, development times, yield) except for a bit of art work (they do get bigger but not much bigger like normal) and the late civics bonus. I have a picture somewhere - will post.
 
I don't see why the civics file is so important for cottage->town. Isn't it mostly Civ4ImprovementsInfos.xml?

Anyway, the reason why all stages of cottage->town look the same is because you didn't change the references to these improvements in Civ4PlotLSystem.xml in the Buildings XML folder.

As for towns being called villages. The most obvious problem would be that you didn't change the txt string associated with the improvements in Civ4ImprovementInfos.xml
 
I thought the art xml file you quotes might be the issue re the pictures. The references to cottages .. towns is all thru that so I'm not going to bother about changing it. We fixed the civic bonus issue (free speech gives +2 c for towns!) by changing our improvement upgrade to end with a 'town' and not our 'town replacement'.
