New Global Ranking System for 2003

I should probably put to rest any background thoughts that people may be thinking with regards to divided of segmented rankings of performance/skill/personality/wealth/or hairstyle.

We are unlikely to implement any choices that will foster division or seperation of small groups of players out of the greater community of GOTM players as whole.

This does not imply that we will not be focusing brighter spotlights on specific areas of game performance. It should be a clear signal that the level of emphasis on these individual performance issues will be strongly influenced by how well the bigger picture issues of the spirit and philosophy behind the GOTM events can be seen to respond.

What we seek here is a set of tools that can be used to help us discuss and evaluate relative game play issues without getting trapped in absolutes. Many players may have lost sight of these issues in the past and allowed themselves to only participate infrequently or to pursue any possible means of a short term exploitive victory.

What makes a measure of one of the best players over time will ultimately be a combination of outstanding individual game performance, consistantly strong performance in a variety of events over time, and valuable long term contributions to discussion and participation by a diverse group of other players.

We have a number of major changes in the works that I am confident will more than adequately identify the best players in our community and provide them with numerous opportunities to cross swords with worthy opponents. I urge you to look closely at each of these changes in terms of the big picture aspects of how they may help every player to find an active place in the field of participants that ultimately provides all the value to the Games of the Month.

The initial decision process does require quite some time though. Our 'internal' discussion on this ranking system has been ongoing for a month now, and looks much like the public thread dealing with the scoring system. In short, many hours have been dedicated to getting a proposal together and analyzing it's strengths and weaknesses. The discussion about how best to implement the system is still ongoing even, as is my being tutored in various Excel methods. :)

There are also web publishing concerns, where more data requires more time to format and error check. How much we are able to automate this process will be a big factor in determining how much we are able to add to the results.

I wanted to make clear that because we are focusing on this one change doesn't mean that ancillary suggestions are being thrown out. For purposes of this discussion, we are trying to focus on getting a 'king-of-the-hill' type ranking system decided upon.

any chance of sharing some of the web publishing tools with the tournament staff - I see the tournament and GOTM as complementary?

I'd like to recommend that whatever system you choose, keep a number of special awards like we have now for fast finishes.
I've had many years of experience with devising and leading competitions, and the most important thing is to keep it interesting for everyone, not just the few contenders for the top positions.

Glad you won't take hairstyle into account, I wouldn't stand a chance in any ranking no more

But more serious, I think the new system looks great and is a vast improvement over the old one. Great work guys.

I saw on the list that I had submitted previous (early gotms) in another name ... can they be merged with my current score?
