Hey guys my birthday is coming up and I want a laptop for my birthday! So I went to Futureshop and checked out the cheapest I can find.

(note: Canadian $$)
Choice # 1
$799.99 by gateway 1.4ghz
15" Thin and light laptop with media card reader
intel celeron m 360 256 memory
40GB (4200RPM) Hard Drive
DVD-Rom/CD-RW combo
64MB Intel Extreme Graphics 2

Choice #2
$999.99 by Toshiba 1.5ghz
Intel Celeron
256MB
40GB 4200RPM
Dual layer DVD-Burner
128MB Intel Extreme Graphics 2

what would be the best choice? Also, would it be able to run Civ4  Don't know much about this stuff. (Can you believe I did first year game art and animation) :goodjob:

Civ4 System Requirements: 1 GHz CPU, 256MB RAM, and a 32MB video card with hardware transform and lighting capabilities. The recommended Specifications are: 512MB of ram, Pentium4 processor, and a recent graphics card (like the Radeon 9800).

Thanks for your help! Need to find out before sept. 15th cause my birthday is on the 16th need something to unwrap.

Well, they're both Celerons and the only difference in performance is .1Ghz; same amount of RAM and hard disk space. If the second comp has the same size screen I would get it. Better graphics card (I'm assuming) and a DVD burner.

Both of those laptops have Intel Extreme(ly bad) integrated graphics. CIV4 is going to need hardware transformation and lighting, which that Intel graphics chip does not support. Thus, both these laptops wouldn't be able to play CIV4. :(

You might want to look for the HP Pavillion ze2000z laptops - you can get one of them for $US720 with a Sempron 2800+, 512 RAM, 40 gig HD, DVD-ROM/CDRW, and its Radeon xPress 200M graphics chip is vastly better than the Intel Integrated stuff, and should play CIV 4 without problem.

Though I agree that the ATI chipset is superior, Intel Extreme GPUs can run the Gamebryo engine with very few if any artifacts. It is my understanding that both Pirates! and Civ4 were built using the same version of Gamebryo. My laptop ran Pirates quite well through its Intel GPU - an 852/855 GM, with all graphics turned to maximum and no noticable slowdown in the animation.

...and you can pick up a number of ATI-based laptops for around $1000.

...try this site for coupons, and see about ordering a Dell with one of these. Something like up to $750 off on laptops.

i didnt really like those 2 options, but #2 is the less worse.
+0.1 GHz
+DVD burner
+64MB VRAM

for 200 bucks.. its worth it.

oh, and i think it will run civ4

Out of those two, number 2 of cource. But you might want to spend more into the laptop since either of those two options is not going to be able to run anything new in a year or two. You might want to pay say around 1400 $ for a decent Laptop (Around 1500 €). But it really depends on what are you going to be running with it.
