New patch 1.21g released!

I guess I posted my happy thanks a little too early. I have installed the patch and I am not able to use files from my PC colleagues--neither a save from a friend nor the Game of the Month works.

Make sure that the files were created with 1.21f on the PC side. If they came from 1.29f, they're not going to work on the Mac.

I can't seem to download the patch from either here or Infogrames. At Infogrames a "connection failure" always occurs. The link on Civfanatics downloads a php file--not the update.

Any suggestions?

the trick with the php files is once you download it, just rename it something ending in .sav -- then put it in your saved games folder and you should be good to go.

I have applyed the patch 1.21g
My hardware is minimal, but adequate to play CivIII:
Beige PowerMac G3 Desktop 300Mhz with 192Mb memory.

Prior to 1.21g, I had (barely) enough memory to play Civ3 without Virtual Memory. I had 152Mb free memory.
The new version uses 196Mb RAM, so I am forced to use Virtual Memory. Works fine. I hate VM.

Saved games now take 100-150K instead if 1Mb each.
Saves and loads are much slower, they take 3s to save, 7 seconds to load; previously saves took 1 seconds, and loads 1.5 seconds.

Cheat : When you load a game, the outcome of the next combat is now random , instead of being determined by the parameters saved with the game.
So you can replay any combat endlessly, until you win against odds, or until your Elite unit generates a Great Leader.
I hope you guyz (J. Butler, Brad O.) fix this soon, but wait till I win a Deity game with the Babylonians first!

To prevent cheating by saving and reloading, you could add a Save Count, or else penalize frequent loads within 5 minutes of a save. Saving a game for the night, and then re-launching it next day is normal; loading a game 100 times is cheating.

Such count would be useful for CivFanatics Game of the Month to prevent cheating by frequent reloads.

Arthur,

You probably changed the Random Seed setting -- in one of the patches (I *think* it was 1.21) they added the option to the front page of turning the Random Seed genertaor on or off.

In terms of GOTMs, I think we should just rely on people's honesty -- it's made pretty clear that you're not supposed to reload to "fix" any mistakes.

It is, after all, just a game -- I love it, but it's just a game.

Your Highness,

I did more tests, and New Games work as they should.
It is only on games saved under an older version of Civ3 that exhibit the random combat outcome.

So, when I feel like cheating my way up to Godhood, I will have to start a game using the CD copy of Civ3, save it, and then play it with 1.21g

Making sure those barbarian huts always give out Discoveries or Settlers sure can give a Despot quite an advantage, alongside the "easy" victories and the surfeat of Great Leaders!. I must not cheat. I must not cheat. (100x).

I never use any Civ Editor: it would feel too much like cheating...
Anyways, I'm not even sure there are Mac versions of those Editors.

Sorry for the False Alert.

BTW, I cannot open the GotM: must be because the PC version is up to 1.29f, and the Mac is merley 1.21g ?
Can you CivFanatics save a special version of the Game of the Month for us Mac Civ Fanatics ?

Just a thought.
