I,m starting this thread to inform new players of the different options and groups where they can find a place to play multiplayer. This is not to discuss whether one is better than the other so please refrain from bringing up any old disputes. There is countless steam groups for civ players and I welcome everyone to tell us about there group:)

The group I would like to promote is no quitters (NQ). Here is a great place to find friendly games with no quitters. The main game style is diplomatic free for alls. (ffa) Although players are welcome to set up any type of game they like. This is a private group joined by invite only.

Our rules go as follows:

Games should be played with good sportsmanship and all players must be treated equal (newbies, the host of the game, officers, all have equal right to participate in a game or vote)

"Pls dont whine and complain when the game doesnt go your way...cause ultimately its only going to go right for one player"

1) No Quitting, unless
i) You lost your capital city
ii) All players agree your civ is irrelevant to the development of the game
iii) All players agree the game is over

2) Only play when you have enough time
i) 4 players 6+ hours
ii) 6 players 7+ hours
iii) 8 players 8+ hours

3) If the game crashes, ALWAYS meet in NQ chat for a reload.
i) A game with technical problems can be scrapped with a majority vote.

4) Trading and allying is allowed with human players. No trading or diplomacy with AI, except when peacemaking.
i) No city gifting.

5) Shift-moves are not allowed.
i) Can be used with majority vote.

6) All players should be respectful and display good sportmanship, abusive players will be kicked.
i) waiting out the turn timer to attack or other reason is considered poor sportsmanship
ii) Suiciding on purpose or staying in game without actually playing is considered worse than quitting.

7) Feel free to host any type of game you like. Be sure to announce your settings so other players are not mislead.
(A game announced "ffa 6 ppl" settings are decided by majority vote)

The rules are constantly being adapted form players input and to avoid disputes.
Here players can participate in discussions about the rules: http://forum.noquitters.org/

So for new players exploring there options for multiplayer feel free to join the chatroom. There will always be an admin around to answer questions and send you an invite should you be interested in joining.

Good luck all and enjoy your civing!!!!!:):)

Really? Cause it looks like there's only one option! ;)

I bet you just forgot, with your long post. :)

I started this thread to encourage others to promote there group. The group I know the most about is no quitters. Two more civ groups I know of are civ players league and battlefield I'm not the best to describe them but I welcome someone who can:)

Onan why are you not promoting your GMR game? Instead of being critical:lol:

:) just a friendly little dig.

My games need no promotion, I guess! 3/6 already! :p

Do we need a thread like this every 3 days?

BTW the group seems to have gotten kind of quiet latly, I hardly see games anymore.

With G+K duels and also teamers got kind of unplayable imo.
So I d look for more FFAs to play - but very few games with decent settings get up in open and civplayers is kind of dead anyway

I have recently started frequenting the forums again so if this thread is a repeat I'm sorry:)

My intention wasn't to cause offence or to reiterate something that is discussed on a frequent bases if you can direct me to a similar thread from 3 days ago I'll be happy to merge the two topics:)

Or we can simply erase this thread if that is the wish of the masses.

What if we all just got together and agreed to have one 'global' civ 5 steam chat 'lobby'? I guess thats basically what CS was talking about. A central hub for everything civ 5, which doesn't belong to anyone, and that all styles of civ 5 play can draw players from.

Put like that it sounds kind of easy. It's just the marketing that would need to happen, once it's decided and supported by a few big sites.

The problem is not everyone is a gentleman like yourself Onan :( Some players find it amusing to use racial slurs and abusive language intended to offend others. NQ being a private group has the option to rid ourselves of players like this. Having a chatroom for all would allow "trolls"(for lack of a better word) who are just interested in causing issues for others to be the center of attention.

Still simple: just keep both chats.

Global one can be monitored by all different group admins, and NQ still has its place for civilised discussion.

Trust me, players can self regulate pretty easy. Back in game spy for civ 3, often you'd get sick of someone and just block them. It wasn't hard, and even new people could see that it was a minority trying to cause chaos.

I'm excited about the changes. Good times ahead, let's hope. Well done!

You can ban players from chat Carls, that is how CP dealt with the Russian trolls we had. Yes it takes a bit more work but having an open chat is much more inviting to new players than a private chat, IMHO.

And don't worry I don't take offense to you forgetting about CivPlayers leagues in your first post :P But just encase people have forgotten CivPlayers is a ranked league that is also a friendly place to have a game of Civ!

My opinion is that keeping both old chat groups is not a good idea, it doesn't encourage players to move to the new universal chat. The best plan, if it can be agreed too, is to have a transition period of say 2-3 weeks, in which admins of both organizations advertise the new universal chat in their old chat lobbies, and then on a set date both old steam groups get deleted. Making the new universal chat/steam group the only game in town.

Then we can advertise the new chat home for all MP players on all the other fan sites like CFC here.

IMHO, this is the best way forward for the MP community as a whole, 2K/Firaxis chose not to provide a built in chat lobby for everyone, and while we can't change that, having one steam chat to use is the next best thing.

So what is good sportsmanship? I went to the NQ community on steam and checked it out, in a few multiplayer games I was bashed for buying land, or attacking workers. I don't quit, after all it is a game and if you can slow down your opponent by killing his settler while he is trying to build the great library then I think that is fair. I have gotten beat badly, no hard feelings. I enjoy a good ffa, but am looking to get into team play, any suggestions?

If you're looking for teamers, you're more likely to find those at civplayers.com.

i respect NQ , but that's why i do not play in NQ + i dont have time for long non-stop online game - another reason i do not play in league

There is new thing GMR - which is awesome, which allows you to have many slow games simultaneously choosing proper day time for you to make move, and without demand to be tied to your PC for few hours nonstop.

Basically, there few options :
NQ - very long games for more peaceful players which have alot of time to sit nonstop near their PC
Civleague - competitive league of Always War aggressive gameplay and for people who like sporty approach, and have some 2-3h for proper non-stop gaming
GMR - games for busy people, who prefer being flexible and choose games with various rules, and not being tied to PC for long time periods. Allows to play many games simultaneously but at very slow pace - turn per day. Games could be very different, depending on host preference, normally.

Buying land, or attacking workers is perfectly fine by NQ rules, it is perfectly legitimate http://steamcommunity.com/groups/NO_QUITTERS Some people might not like it, just remember that anyone can and is encouraged to add NQ to their steam nick, having NQ in their name does not mean they are a NQ admin.

If you like free for alls, NQ is currently the best place to get good MP games.

All that you have listed is allowed in NQ. If players don't protect workers/settlers they get what they deserve in my opinion.

As far as team games im hosting a 2vs2 tournament in NQ on Sunday August 12th http://forum.noquitters.org/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=114

Remember NQ is all for fun so if your looking for real competitive games with shift moves and a ranking system you'll find them at civ players.

I am really embarrassed, but what is "shift moves"?
