New sound card?

Whenever I play certain games on my laptop (like Counter-Strike: Source or Falcon 4.0 Allied Force), the sound and music in the games will freak out and sound really weird and warped but when I exit the games, all Windows sounds and sounds in other games will play fine. If I go back into one of the two games, the sound will still be screwed up until I restart the computer. What is going on here? Is it my sound card? It can't be the speakers or all of the other sounds on the computer would be screwed up too...

I had the samekind of problem once. Could be the EAX settings. They give some extra effects in sound, like that echoing you mentioned. They can be set off somewhere in your audio settings (Audiohq if you have Creative).

(Currently my own audiohq bugs so cannot verify this).
