Due to its historical improtance I think it would be good to add culinary arts to the tech tree, somewhere after aestheics and as a prerequisite to chemistry. Most foods have association with some national idenity and it has an important role in culture, plus cooking is a basic form of chemistry.

mod it in.... But it needs to have a purpose like Chemistry gives us all these neat things, aestheics gives us the Statue of Zeus.

I demand haggis!

:p

New Techs I think should be brought in:

The Automobile +1 :commerce: on roads within fat cross
Television +1:) , +2:culture: , TV station as Corpo
Pennicillin +2health in all cities, 10% chance this tech will spread to neighbouring Civs

I also think Techs which are not techs at all, like govt techs, i.e. Communism, Serfdom, Democracy shouldnt have to be researched, but rather would appear when certain conditions were met. i.e.

Democracy comes after emancipation is implemented (I cant remember if this comes with Democracy, if so it should come from a new tech), printing press is researched and slavery has been abolished for say 400 turns on epic. Communism appears when 75% of your cities have factories, at least 3 cities have  under free market and if losing a war, only 25% of cities need factories. then you should have access to the associated Civics, but they should still be optional

I would say Plastic Surgery. We can build Beauty Centers.

+1 :)
+%15 :gp: birth rate(artist)

I love the automobile (to build tanks and give an extra coin to streets [back to the roots]) and television idea.

Off topic: Why would democracy be available after 400 or so turns without slavery. I never had early American history in school (or maybe at that time I wasn't really interested in history) but wasn't the first democracy the USA and by that time they still had slaves. Correct me if I'm wrong.

America wasnt the first democracy. but I admit that was a bit random... I'll develop the idea later. I'm in work though, so if anyone has a list of Govermental techs and could post that would really help. I think its a good idea myself, like researching Optics and Rifliing is pretty plausible, but its not like Tsar Nicholas had Moscow state look up Marxism for 3 years before the revolution happened. Govt. Techs should beocme available in the right circumstances IMO

Television ~ Radio
Pennicilin ~ Medicine
Automobile ~ Industrialism?

Although RADAR is an important tech? Or it is in Advanced Flight?

but the autonmobile and industrilism arent he same thing, anymore than assembly line and industrialism are. Same goes for others

I would argue that Governemt techs really are techs. Democracy really is, by definition, a "technology." Knowing the best ways to govern yourself is no different than knowing the best ways to culitvate plants or to fight battles.

Except one mans democracy is another mans oppression. whereas Physics is physics wether youre in UCLA, Pyongyang University or Trinity college dublin. Physics, Industrialism, fishing, Agriculture, no one debates what they are. Democracy, Communism, Totalitarianism, Serfdom etc, yeah we have broad definitions of them but no two people have identical takes on what they should mean

That's not necessarilly true Ralph, Aggriculture is Aggriculture whether you're at 30 degrees latitude or 60? whether you're 300 ft. below sea level or 4000 ft. above it? The same techniques will not work. Writing is Writing and noone argues whether something is writing or "pictograph?" Fishing is fishing? 3rd world impovrished people would argue that dropping dynamite and cyanide by a coral reef equates to "fishing" -- they have to feed their family. Sure, there are differnet forms of "Communism" and "Democracy," but the general idea is the same. There are differnet forms of Fishing, Writing, Agriculture, and just about everything.

I'd say that Physics and Math are unique in the fact that they are more universal, but there are still different disciplines of Physics and Math although they are not different forms per say.

I agree with everything else you said above, except that forms of government are not technologies.

The Automobile kind of does need its own teck, I would love to get Commerce back on road tiles even if it is just one (Plus it would be great with Road\River Financial) Automobile would have to be between steam power and industrialism somewhere, You should be able to do it pre combustion engine though as there are steam cars.
Television should give -10% Hammers for its happy bonus,
Penicilin really does go right in with medicine.
Some techs need proper names too, like Music being Musical Notation (Or even Music Theory like 3) and Combustion being the combustion engine, obviously the ability to burn things would have to be a very early tech...

I was thinking Culinary Institute National Wonder, +2Culture for Fish, Clam, Crab, Wheat, Rice, Corn, Sheep, Cow, Pig, Spice, Sugar, Banana. Max Culture would be a very reasonable 24 and normally you would get at least 16. +2 Artist of course, and +2 Health all cities for improved food preperation techqunique.
I should start moding but ive been to lazy to go through the scripts, I might try it though, It great in two and proably what got me started on the serise.

I dont think you should meet certain conditions, because that would make Spiritual weaker (you cant meet all conditions right?) and that would penalize large countries (so my 1 city-state can go to communism with one factory, but the United Empire of Ghandi needs 30 factories to do so...), and, finally, if youre playing without your manual in hands, you can go through the entire game on the basic civics, because you dont know what to do to enable those new government forms!

I vote no. Civics as techs are fine for me.

I like to think that a Representation nation with lots of merchant specialists is a burgeouis society, maybe with a weak, powerless monarch, while a Representation nation with lots of science specialists is a technocracy. Someone with Caste System looking for a cultural victory has a different society than someone with Caste System spamming great artists to help him culture bomb his conquered enemy cities; maybe the last society has a warrior caste to convert the conquered enemies or something, i dunno. Play Epic/Marathon and roleplay, its fun sometimes :D

I think representation should come earlier in the game. I mean, it's not like Rome or Greece both built the pyramids.

.

Hmm, I dont know... there are different forms of fishing, but the desired outcome is still the same: get the fish on to your plate;) Agriculture has different techniques, but again, same end product is desired. However, the type pf communism Marx wanted, to its fullest extent, was clearly a completely different beast than other who have claimed to be communists, like Pol Pot, they obviously had almost no views in common. East Germany was called the German Democratic Republic, but was obviously not the same type of Govt as democratic Switzerland, USA or Venezuela

Yeah, the "ends" in government are the same too, by comparing different democracies is just comparing different "means". "Control the people" is the purpose of government, just like "Get fish on my plate" is the purpose of fishing.
