New to Civ3, how do I play custom made stuff?

Hi folks!

I got a pretty old version of Civ3 and for some reason I can't update, it always gives me error messages, I had to reinstall it many times. I tried some custom stuff from this forum, but nothing really worked, so my question is - do I need a special version for this to work? I got like, I dunno, the very first? Maybe 1.09, I'll check later on and post here.

Another thing: There isn't anything written on my game box about a special version. No 'Gold', no 'Conquests' or what have you. And what the hell is vanilla? So many questions, please answer them quickly, and remember, everyone was a newbie once :)

Thanks,
MK

I know that this is the second post in a row, but there are so many users online, and no one is willing to answer my questions? Well then, thanks community! Great...

Vanilla is probably what you have. You may be able to play some old mods or scenarios.

If they are for PTW or Conquests, (the other 2 expansion packs), they will usually say for PTW f1.xx, or for C3C v f1.xx.
(PTW = Play the World expansion pack, C3C = Civ III Conquests expansion pack)

I am not sure what the last patch for regular civ III was.

I know PTw's last patch was f1.27, and C3C is currently on f1.22, and it may be the last.

but will I be able to play newer maps with my old vanilla version? and where can I find the older mods, are they still hosted somewhere in this forum?

anyways, I appreciate your answer!

Maybe PTW maps. But C3C maps will more than likelyhave volcanoes, marsh and maybe landmark terrain... which Vanilla doesn't.

Uhm, do you have a legal version? You can't use an official patch on an unofficial game...
You may have troubles playing newer maps (don't really remember, haven't played/modded vanilla in two years...)

I do have a legal version, but as my computer is pretty buggy at the moment (well, the system runs smoothly, and you know what they say about a running system - never touch it!). Its just a few games that are giving me problems atm, and as I don't see any disadvantages except that I won't be able to play the newest mods, I don't see why I should possibly formate my whole pc just to get one game working. So, any things I have to look for or is it just try and error with the mods?

Well, you should be able to add stuff yourself, but most mods (especially for PTW/C3C) will be impossible. I recommend that you buy C3C (which includes the important parts of PTW, BTW), it's much better suited for modding. Besides, if you get it I think that it doesn't matter if you can't update vanilla.

The editor is pretty easy to use, if you have played a bit of Civ III. It also has a help section which explains most aspects pretty well.

Also, in the completed modpacks section, go to the very end, and see if any mods are for Civ III f1.29, (the final patch for Vanilla was 1.29f )
