I'm new to Civ3. I got it on Christmas and i've been playing it ever since. I guess I play it a lot, i'm up to 1920 already. Well, I restarted again after reaching 1960 in my other game but I got CRUSHED by the egyptians. In my new game, I am below the egytpians, and above of the French. They seem to ALWAYS to into war. Egypt always takes a city or two from the french. So anyways, I built a few cities where french cities use to stand. I got some good resources too..I can't seem to build a big enough army to even stand a chance against any nation! Thats why this game I didn't go to war with anyone, I just tried to build a solid empire with plenty of cities. Whenever I try to make any type of unit..my gold starts to decrease, -2, -3 a turn. I hate losing gold! I only have around 400gold. I want to know if there is a way to keep making units AND earning gold per turn. I did lower science and ent funds. But I moved them back up. Can anyone introduce a good strategy to me?

1. Trade with your neighbors! Sell spare resources/luxuries for gold per turn. Sell tech advances for gold per turn.

2. Build commerce related improvements in all your cities. This includes marketplaces, and banks. Build commerce related wonders, like Wall Street.

3. Don't ignore the effect roads and railroads have on commerce producing tiles.

4. Mine those gold nuggets.

5. Government type to Republic, or Democracy.

Having enough cash is very important in this game. Without a decent cash flow, (in the later stages of my games, I usually exceed 800 gold per turn, while essentially maxing out research, and setting entertainment to 20%- 30%), it's very hard to get anywhere.

Well,
I usually go republic early in the game when i had access to market.

Later in the game i usually had about 2000++ gold per turn, I ever get 4000++ gold per turn about 90++ giant citys.
I only need to set my reseach level set to only 20-30% to get the fastest reseach speed (1 tech every 4 turns). In addition, i will have about 300++ tanks running around kick butts. 3 defencer at each citys, 50 ++ workers.

:D

Of cause you need to go to the editer to edit the best number city's for each size of map. this will reduce waste level.

I set them as below
tiny 25 citys
small 50 citys
normal 75 citys
large 150 citys
huge 300 citys

So..how do I mine those? Just build mines near them? Sorry for asking such a newbie question..But I Dont know.

Unless you're playing on a low level of dificulty, it's advised to have some periods of 0 science. Not 10% as some people say, but 0.
Whenever you know you're buying or getting a specific tech as war reparations, don't spend a cent on it. Besides, some crappy or dead end techs (free artistry, espionage) can be bought later for almost free.
Those 0 science periods will give you a huge boost of cash. And don't worry so much about science, it's ain't Civ 2. You can always get the techs by trade or conquest. And when eveyone is crippled bc of so many wars, it's time to swap to democracy and actually do some research.

roads roads roads! This will dramatically increase your gold. All other suggestions are also very good and you should follow them (cash improvements, govmt type, trade, etc.).

You can build them anywhere indeed (except for jungle and tundra terrain that is), but if it's wise to do so depends on how you want your city to grow.

Now, with the gold, the way u get it is by getting a citizen to work it.

In the city screen, theres' the big veiw that swows the city radius. if u clik anywhere on it, a citizen will work the land there.
so just klik on ze gold icon.

i like to go w/ monarchy. sure, only 50-200 gold a turn but lotsa military!

ok thanks
now i know why i get negative gold per turn when i build up an army to attack...

Make sure you're letting your cities get big enough...assuming you've got them surrounded by roads and all. And don't underestimate those river squares!

Palace and FP placement is also crucial. for great advice on all these matters visit the great War Academy here at CFC.
