Ships Captain
Well finaly got around to making the IL2 ground attack plane. Although planes take very little time to make as a unit (compared to infantry or ships) the problem is actualy getting around to doing it, Iv'e alway got other things to work on and asume that cos the plane unit will be easy to do, I can leave it till later.
Any way, here is the IL2 ground attack plane The Russian Flavour version of the ground attack plane/heavy fighter (which will soon be revamped). At first the air forces of the world had trouble convincing the army leaders (usualy army or navy generals) that planes could be used as close air suport for attacking ground forces, A kind of flying artillery. The first Nation to perfect the idea was, unsuprisingly, the germans. The first Junkas stuka dive bombers flew during the spanish civil war as part of the condor legion; Unlike conventional bombers which flew at high altitude and relied on sheer volume of bombs dropped, the new air suport dive bombers could uleash thier small payloads within 50 feet of a target, a precision strike undreamed of by the clumsy trimotor and twin engine bombers used up to that point. Even the bigger bombers were not as usefull at actualy destroying enemy military forces, before the war the allies had asumed that a single flight of medium bombers such as the Heinkel 111 could kill hundreds of people- as it turned out the Hienkel 111 and junkers 52 were exelent at causing damaged to buildings and fortifications, but very poor at actualy killing enemy troops and armour, the bombs falling much too randomly to be realy effective.
The IL2 was the most famous Russian plane, working together with the t34 the Il2 alowed a blitzkrieg attack even faster and more devestating than the german war machine had been capable of. The IL2 was armoured to provide protection from groung defences and used mostly machinegunns and automatic cannons rather than bombs, able to attack many targets before having to return to refuel/rearm.
To us ethe unit please create a folder in your Civ III/art/units folder called Divebomber and add the contents of the following zip file to the folder; Divebomber
Here is a preview of the unit;
