New wonder: The Large Hadron Collider

Still think there needs to be a risk it turns out to be a useless waste of money.

Maybe, but I'd guess it's just a step you have to take anyway - it is after all the most (debatable) logical choice to understand how this universe came to be and what it is composed of. So, even if we don't get any science out of it, we know that this setup didn't work; or maybe that our picture of Physics was more complete than we thought. Remember Aether and those theories ;)?

It would probably come to late (available at superconductor?) to do any good except maybe coupled with the next war mod, especially since there is another wonder for the spaceship. I really only think it should provide a scientific bonus, it's pretty much just pure fundamental science that may or may not provide a practical benefit in the future. Gives you four free scientist or something.

Or you could make it a Manhattan project like prerequisite for antimatter bombs and black hole guns like someone mentioned, just for flavour. Maybe even wormhole gates for instantaneous transport to replace railways.

How come you have to pay all the maintainance while the other civ's that contributed get a science bonus for next to nothing!

.....I know where I'd aim the blasted thing first!

How do you aim a beam with a circular path at anything other than ANOTHER circular beam with the same (but reverse) trajectory..?

Not sure I agree with the culture thing. Ever since it's been turned on, I'm fairly sure no-one's actually allowed to go down there that doesn't work there now

True, but loads of us have been down there already, especially when it got close to starting, and as soon as the most fevered work is done you can bet that there'd be long queues of people waiting to go back down.

Still think there needs to be a risk it turns out to be a useless waste of money.

Regardless of any breakthrough or lack thereof, it's use as a source of training for scientists and engineers, as well as inspiring interest in science by the wider public would still apply, so the continuous science boost would still be justified.

Maybe it could cause extra unhappiness in any other civ's city that runs Scientist specialists? :D

chance the ai wars you for it?

chance it malfunctions and destroys some squares around it?
a chance of being sent into a time loop and going extinct with the dinosaurs?

Yeah lets add that effect to the Internet. 25% that Telecoms screw everything up and you need everyone else to have the tech before you get it.

I don't see the point of the additional culture but extra maintenance and huge science bonuses make sense. Maybe make it like the Manhattan project and instead it allows you to build some other super weapon. (Black Hole Creator!!)

"While it may kill everyone, at least it will eat the blues first giving us victory for a few hundred milliseconds!"

The 10% Space ship parts production would be really minimal. I don't even bother with The Space elevator.

wether or not the experiments conducted there reveal new information in particle theory or new insights into the origin of the universe, the techniques and skills needed to construct the thing itself gave science a boost to begin with.

and as said before, scientists and engineers working there are the best of the best. bringing those people together working on the same project will give breakthroughs, small or big. even disproving theories is progress.

to quote a line from a particle physicist in the TV show friends:

"it took 10 years and a lot of funding to prove erm... well... that it cant be done"

Since a lots of countries participate, a team project or world projects suits it better. It unlocks the tech tree for the post-modern era for all the living civilizations.

It sounds good idea to make it a team wonder that could only be built by 2 or more civilisation in an alliance. It then ceases to function if the alliance breaks down.

The same naysayers said that detonation of an atomic weapon would ignite the atmosphere. NOT that i am all pro-nuke...

If LHC destroys the Earth, who cares? We won't be around to complain anyway. If it doesn't we'll gain a great deal (over time) of valuable insight into particle physics (I hope).

You may be right, but in the end they may just say "well we have some very interesting data that you won't understand but indications are we need a bigger one - in France."

As for the effects of building it, have it generate a random GPP or two..

Great Engineer - The contractor who built it, a job for life.
Great Scientist - The beardy Bullsh*****r who made a career writing papers on it that no-one would read.
Great Merchant - The wheeler dealer who made more money out of it than anyone else.
Great Prophet - well particle physics = cult most of the time these days... :)
Great Artist - The guy who picked the whole waste of money in formaldehyde and sold it to some other mug...

I think the collider is a good idea! but you give it too many effects. It seems to be a tendency when people make Civ contents, be it civilizations unique buildings and units and whatnot. It can't just be a simple thing with one special ability like all the others, nooo. :)

Also, this funny thing in the spoiler below contains very slightly mature content. Come on, it's really mild... But funny (but it might just be me).

You can chose new type of victory. Black hole victory. Build the Collider and create a black hole to consume the world. You win!

The Lard Hadron Collider already exists as a wonder.... sorta. It's the Supercollider secret project in Alpha Centauri. :D
