How close to Earth is the Terra map? Does it have historically accurate starting positions? I'm anticipating this game for the Mac, I'd appreciate any input!

Terra does not mean Earth. There is a Planet map, which is Earth. Terra is a map with big continents and small islands, kind of like Earth. The Planet map has realistic starting positions as possible.

Terra means there is one continent for the civilizations and another continent that is isolated and overrun by barbarians (until Optics-Astronomy is discovered). I have played quite a few Terra games and the "New World" never really matters which detracts from the enjoyment.

The post you quoted was sarcastic, and actually making fun of you. You do know what sarcasm means, right?

Careful; this entire thread may be a satire; and all his posts just examples of the sarcasm develped in his brilliant mind.

...

Or not. XD

Hmmm... Never really bothered with a Planet game; though seeing as its supposed to be as "earth-like" as possible; I might as well give it a try.

Oh and you're welcome General Civ. Just remember that 7 minutes isn't a lot of time. 7 centuries is. XP

So, is the game over before Galleons, or have you found a way to limit the effectiveness of large amounts of extra land?

i like terra in theory. in practice it's a bloodbath due to everyone starting on top of each other. fun, but i wouldn't exactly beeline for astronomy, cause you'll have bigger problems at home.

I’ve played one terra game so far. I was the first to discover the new continent with a caravel. I landed a scout near a goody hut, and the villagers gave him Astronomy (!). By the time the AI civs decided to found their own colonies, I owned about 3/4 of the continent, and soon overrun almost all of their colonies with my superior culture. That was in monarch difficulty, standard size world. I finally won a space race victory, but I was a few percentage points short of domination.

Terra games are fun.

Actually, the Earth map is Earth. Planet looks like a copy of the default map from Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri.

It matters when you're going for Domination.

Incidentally, I've only won a Terra map once, and in that manner. It was pretty easy actually, I just beelined for Cavalry, skipping Knights, and used the Liberalism slingshot for Astronomy. I beat the barbarians to rifles, and more or less overran them. :nuke:
