Hello All,
I keep getting my ass kicked at this game...ive played for a day or so though....
can anyone give me any advice as how to start my civ ...i generally start with :
1 worker - start irigating
1 warrior - to explore
1 worker - irigating/mining
more warriors...swordsmen etc...
--is there any methodology as how to start building up your units?
--same question for buildings/improvements

Thanks
p.s. how to insert those cool avatar pics next your name?

Skip the irrigations and mines for later stages. During the Ancient era you should only build roads.

Also, you don´t need that many workers. Concentrate on expanding instead, so build settlers as fast as you can.

The same goes for improvements - build a pair of barracks and maybe a temple in cities waiting to grow to size 3 when you again build a settler.

First, make sure you are playing on Chieftain level. This is the easiest level and a good one to start on so you can learn the game.

When I start I usually build a warrior first to explore for goody huts and a good city site, and then build a settler to found a new city. A settler takes away two population points so you can't finish building one until your city is size three. I try to time it so that my settler will finish just as the city reaches size 3, and how you do this varies depending on the surrounding terrain and the food and shields it provides.

City placement is very important. This is one area that you as the human player have a major advantage over the AI. The AI founds its first city right where its settler starts. If the surrounding terrain looks good, then go ahead and found your capital right away. However, it often pays to look around a bit before settling your first city. I usually use all my starting units to explore my surroundings for a few turns, and then go back and load the 4000BC auto save. This is semi-cheating, but if you aren't playing in a tournament or anything this can save you a lot of trouble in the long run of trying to play out an awful starting location that will force you to lose.

In the beginning expansion is key to a long-term success. Remember that and you should do okay. I hope this helps. :)
