Newbie Q's. Please help me.

1) I cannot make armies without leader. I made a military academy and still cannot. There is not button for build army in the city with the academy. I also tried clicking on a unit in the city and still cannot.

2) Does coastal fortress do anything? Does it really attack a ship that goes near it?? I have not seen it happen. Ever.

3) I am in the 1800s and if I change to anything other than monarchy I get very unhappy citizens. How do I upgrade government and still be able to have a major war.

1) you can build an army the same way you build a unit, but only from the city that has the Military Academy

2) The coastal fortress improves the defence bonus if your city is being bombarded. It also fires at passing enemy ships (apparently - haven't seen it myself)

3) Your problem is you are using military units to handle your citizens unhappiness. You need to build Temples and Cathedrals etc as they are independant of government type. Also, putting roads to your cities mean luxury resources are taken into your city - each different luxury type (e.g gems, wine, dye) make an angry citizen content. Either that or bump up the luxury rate.

The coastal fortress do work (for me anyway), but u only see/hear the animation for firing, if the coastal fotress makes a succesfull hit against the passing ships (thet have to pass directly by the city, 1 sq) - and coastal fortresses are very weak at bombardment, so it doesn't happen very often.
This can be changed with the editor though.

Actually, you have to have a victorious army before being able to build the academy at all, which can be changed in the editor.
