sometimes these battles just don't make sense. i realize that its all a matter of defense and attack strength, and random 'die rolls' that determine the oucome of a battle, but sometimes, it is just too much to believe. 7 modern armor, 6 mech infantry, 8 knights and 3 bowmen (all veteran or better) got couldn't take out the Persian capital which had exactly 2 spearmen.

come on. this is ridiculous. just how do spearmen defend against modern armor? what is it about mortar being blasted in you face that is easy to ignore?

anyone have any thoughts on this?

(this is akin to the upsets that happen in the old risk game where somebody just freakishly keeps rolling a 6 with their last defense and stands proud over a horde of 20-30 armies invading Siam.)

I quite like newbie questions but .....

As always happens you need to be more precise.
What difficulty u playin on?
Who has the mortar?? U bombing them, or they bombing y??

Is the city on some kinda hill or other defensive terrain. Like the other side of a river. But tanks should be cert over spearmen in 9 out 10 battle.

Anyone who is thinking of starting the "my elite tank lost to a warrior" thread please think again.

well...

first of all, since im new, im still playing on the chieftain level.

I was the aggressor, with the massive army of modern armor, mech infantry, knights and bowmen. (used the knights and bowmen because i had them laying around, and why not?) I was attacking the capital of Persia, all units had full hitpoints, and the city was the last Persian city. i don't recall the terrain. im too new to have paid that much attention yet.

however, i hardly think it is important whether i was attacking a city on a hill, across a river, or whatever. the point is still that 2 spearmen won a battle (i.e. defeated ALL attacking units) against the forces i described earlier. this just isn't realistic, not by ANY stretch of military tactical imagination. not by a longshot. so while there may have been defense modifiers, like hills and walls and fortification, there is still no way that this outcome is even plausible.

Sorry iv bein away for a while but my response is......

1): Bombard 7 shades of something out of all defences if u get the chance. Blasting away at cities may remove valuable improvements but if u cant beat them carpet bomb them.

2): Upgrade units. Knights > Calvary etc....

3): How can fast moving units Knights, mech inf, tanks bit beat by spearmen. Fast units should retreat if about to lose. unless they out of movement for that turn. In this case wait. or defence gets down to one health point in which case a fight to the death starts.

4): Use armies. U should have produced atleast one leader by the time u get mech inf (atleast at chieftain). ALWAYS turn the poor bloke into a army. UNLESS ur playin at diety in this case the great library now has pride of place in ur capital. Armies kick serious ass.

5): a new patch has come out. So use it. Making 4 out of 5 of my comments useless

Good luck
