Good day. I'm just getting started with Civ series, playing my 3rd round now, read a bunch of FAQs, but I still have a question. (Sure I've overlooked it somewhere but English is not my native language so please excuse me.) When you've just built a city, militia unit production takes for example 5 turns; but right after unit was built, construction speed reduces gradually. Which parameter exactly influences this speed? What you have to do to improve construction speed? I've found that I'm doing something wrong because I'm waiting for a new settler or battle unit for ages.

The things I got — you have to choose the right spot for the city, basically near water, mountains and extra goods; you have to mine and irrigate in order to get more food from.

Thanks in advance for help.

On the city screen, look for the area that has horizontal rows of wheat and shields. The more shields a city generates, the faster it can build stuff. The shields come from workers working the surrounding terrain. Each population point gets you one more worker.

Depending on the government type, military units can use up some of the shields that would otherwise go towards building something.
