COTM 39: Maya

I recently saw Apocalypto, so I'm just in the mood for a Maya game! And there's a week left in COTM38, so as advertised, the difficulty comes way down to Regent. A Pangaea map, Wet and Warm, should give you lots of Jungle to search out your victims!

Here is the COTM39 game info:

Civilization: Maya
Rivals: 10 pre-selected.
Barbarians: Restless
Difficulty: Regent
Land Form: Pangaea, 60% ocean, Standard map.
Geology:5 billion years old, Wet and Warm.
AI Aggression: Normal

Conquest-Class Bonuses:

  1. Two bonus Spearmen
    Knowledge of Warrior Code
    50 bonus Gold

Predator-Class Obstacles:

  1. Don't Know Masonry
Most AI start with 2 Spearmen
2 Bonus Free Support (for the Spearmen) and 1 Unit Bonus Support per city

(Note: this is a standard sized map, and the standard time limit will apply.)

(Note: being a Large map at higher difficulty level, you get an extra week to play the game!)

I think he's using the same post template from last month's COTM (which was a Large map). So, I'm guessing we have a Standard map this month...with 10 opponents. Gonna be a slightly bit crowded affair!

Probably, but I just like to rattle his chain. :p

:hmm: But is it a Mayan game or an Aztec game, or some confusion of the two? Can we have slavers and jaguars? ;) Either way, good film.

nihao ansar, hello PB and othniel, you are so energetic and react quick!

edit:
I think I will focus a Modern-Time republic 100k game this time.

I think some conquering is in order...
since civ_steve imply "lots of Jungle", I think we are seperate by main land, maybe not by sea, but extremely huge amount of Jungle. so conquering is boring too, especially when use 2-movement units.

Well, we're industrious, so it won't be that bad. :)

What do you guys think? Settle on the hill? That way we get all the BGLs and the defensive bonus? I got the lowest score Spaceship Victory last time. I think this time I will go for the lowest score Diplomatic Victory. In fact, I will never declare war on anyone at any time. No mutual protection pacts. If I am attacked I will defend myself and overtake if necessary!!!!!!

All I know is that moving the worker east will reveal some tiles. :)

But as you say, settling on the hill sounds tempting. Either that or NE.

Sorry, the map is standard size, and I left last month's 'note' in by mistake, being in a hurry to get this game out.

Hope you enjoy it ... shortly. And don't get dragged out of your hut, tied up, and coated with blue paint! (That's a really bad sign)

Returning to GOTM after a long absence (house moves and similar headaches). Last game I played was a normal game on Chieftan (normally play at least Emperor on my own), an experiment to see if without obstacles I could reach the early benchmarks for Space race/dippo victory that are used in the Jason score calculator. I got closer, but still only 1200AD for a dippo.

So I shall be aiming for the diplomatic victory here, in an effort to grab a hold of one of the only two remaining lowest scoring shields I haven't yet got. Announce me as a contender for the eptathalon of incompetence.

Oof... no Portugal! :D :mischief:

Well, as it's regent I might be playing this game...

If moving my worker NE reveals nice bonuses (food please!), I might move my settler NE or on the hill. But I'd most likely settle in place.

Or, of course, north, on the coast. And even if that happens to be a fresh water lake, you'll still have the fresh water! But Maya aren't seafaring (or are they?) and it's a pangaea so coastal cities aren't that important.

10 rivals? This is going to be REALLY crowded. I might want to research the weel first and get some chariots. If I'd do that, that would be the first time for me as I always somehow seem to get HBR really early... and I never engaged a serious AA war.

Wow, 5 1/2 hours for the pre-game discussion, and that in the middle of the night! It used to be at least three whole days.

Well, if it's as crowded as it sounds, I think some conquering is in order...

10 rivals on 40% land isn't really that crowded. When you compare it to the standard 7 rivals but on only 20-30% land, it's not a big deal.

On-topic: Starting position is nice, but I don't see a food bonus... :(

Maya are agricultural, so settling on fresh water is a food bonus. I wouldn't expect much more than that on Regent, and I definitely would not move off the river without knowing that the other water is fresh.

I think worker east to work the BG - if nothing appears, then settle in place and head for the (presumably) easy Republic slingshot.

If that's the case, I'll just settle in place and get the ball towards Republic rolling! :D

Let's just hope there's at least one lux nearby. But maybe the mods chose to be evil after all :assimilate:

edit: But I won't be starting this game before I finish (or get tired of) another game I'm playing now.

I might send the worker up the hill, to see what it can see. The extra turn it takes to get started is no big deal... but seeing a food bonus nearby that I would have to move to get is.

I dunno that we get a food bonus, though. Maya is close to being a superciv, especially with regent level barbs giving us a fair number of slaves.

Definitely go for the slingshot - shouldnt' be any problems getting it, unless a couple of civs start out with powerhouses.

Gonna give this COTM a try. Not sure if I have the time to complete a game in a month or not. I know that sounds pathetic but working full-time, married, 2-year old toddler, baby on the way, and finishing the basement just doesn't leave much time. If you don't see me post a finished game, just assume I'm hanging drywall.
