GOTM164 Osman of the Ottomans

In this year's Christmas game, number 164 of the classic game of the month series, you will rule as Osman over the Ottomans, who are Industrious and Scientific and start the game with the knowledge of Bronze Working and Masonry. The sponsored victory condition for this contest is the Space Race victory, which is acheived by being the first civilization to launch a space ship to Alpha Centauri. Games finished in any other way are not eligible to win this contest.

This is a Monarch-level game designed by me, Più Freddo. The Ottoman unique unit is the Sipahi, a very strong and expensive replacement for Cavalry. There are no special rule changes, just a bit of map tweaking.

This is your somewhat tricky start position:

The start may be difficult, but there are, after a little while, a couple of Christmas Presents available to him or her who looks for them.

We continue to use a modified form of the standard PTW scenario, and although no bugs have been reported in some time, it is possible that play testing has not been exhaustive. Any in-game event or behaviour that a player feels is unintended should be reported to the GOTM staff immediately.

Scope of the Game:

Civilization|Ottomans
Difficulty|Monarch
Map size|Standard, 100x100 Tiles
Map topology|Continents, 30 % land area
Climate|Wet and warm
Rivals|7 Pre-Selected AI Tribes
Barbarians|Raging
Required victory condition|Space

If the water to the West is sweet and not salty, should I move to it or settle on the hill? If I settle in place it would be easier to irrigate food bonuses. Alternatively there seem to be a Forest 2NW which could be chopped to get access to irrigation (and the chop can be used for Granary). Hmm.

Also, I forgot: does Wine on Plains give food bonus in Despotism?

At least we'll be able to tell whether it is a lake without moving.

Wine is +1 food, so I don't think there is any reason to irrigate it in despotism.

So, the download page says, "The sponsored victory condition for this contest is the Space Race victory, which is achieved by eliminating all the other tribes." I'm sure hoping this is a typo and not a requirement to win both ways! ;)

Also, we might want to remove the "If you have Conquests, you for sure have PTW" text.

I'm a little concerned with the tricky/difficult start statements. It'll be a while before I can get to this game, so I guess I'll just be anxious about it until then. At first I was thinking that it was just about the lack of fresh water at the start, assuming the water we see to the west is salt, but now I've started to worry that we are isolated on a small waterless island and that the Christmas presents are resources on one-tile islands that we alone can get to with map making. I'd better finish my current game before my imagination totally runs away with me.

The idea in general is to start and spend a lot of time - just in order to - not having had a few hours - to remain with nothing for the second time in recent times ...

I'm sorry if you don't have time to finish, but as far as I'm concerned, the general idea is to have fun.

like hell ı protest this game and no , ı won't be playing . They ain't not Ottomans .

Perhaps we can indeed get an additional 1-2 weeks for this one? A long space race game right after a time-consuming Sid level game is not so easy...
I'd like to give this a try, just to find out the "Christmas presents"... but I won't have time to start until next week.
