Well now that I've completed my first GOTM, I'm hooked. So the question is:

When does Cracker's crack staff post the characteristics of the next game?

So far all I've seen is that the civ will be the Vikings (which I don't have in 1.29). But what size map, type map? What civ characteristics?

I'd like to be able to get some sort of reasonable approximation and try and jump start my learning curve.:scan:

I think you'll have to be patient a little while longer. Cracker usually posts the game announcement thread about a week (sometimes a little less) before the game comes available for play.
Usually that is around the 24th-26th of the month....
In this thread you'll find what you want to know, so I guess you'll have to wait around 10 days for the information of the Vikings game.

.....and about a week before the game announcement, cracker will post a 'guess what the next GOTM will be like' thread. This should be happenening fairly soon. I would recommend that read, since some of the guesses come pretty darn close.

Sir Bugsy, if you want more practice, you can always replay the previous GOTM that you missed. Since the score and spoilers already posted, you can instantly compare your game without having to wait until the end of the month.;)

Thanks Moonsinger,

That's what I started last night... gotm20. Even if I get my butt kicked, it should be a learning experience.

It will be a great learning experience. After Gotm 20, I played Gotm 19 and that really helped me in Gotm 21. I was planning on doing Gotm 18 after Gotm 21 but may noy finish Gotm 21 in time to complete Gotm18 but you can play these old Gotms any time. Moonsingers suggestion is an excellent one.

Also, since you're only practising and not competing, you can read the spoilers before or as you play. This should allow you to learn faster as it's easier to apply the interesting advice found in the spoilers in the context within which it was written before trying to adapt it to a different GOTM.

and don't forget the info centre and war academy (links to left of page)
I think that the info centre was updated to include all the PTW civs... should give some useful info on new civs' attributes etc.
I don't know how to post links correctly but they are on the main home page

http:www.civ3.com

"Meet the Civ3 Civs" link on the left, then the link on the right under "Play the World". There's listings for other civs coming up later (Arabs for example) so it's got plenty of info for you to mull.

The Vikings are Militaristic, Expansionist. The UU is the Berserk, which replaces longbowman with more power and amphibious attack. If you play as Zulu you can see what the civ traits will be like, and if you minimize Impi and delay your GA until Invention, you can approximate the GA characteristics (at least triggered by battle...)

Just don't get Gunpowder before building as many Impi as you want to trigger GA because the Impi is obsoleted by Muskets. Don't go overboard on Impi early -- if I were trying to simulate it I wouldn't build any until middle ages.

Sorry, can't help on map type. The wild speculation thread should open in a few days ;)

I'd love to see a WW2 based GOTM. Maybe as the Germans or British...
All the GOTMs I've seen so far are ancient or medieval civs.
