The more civs and city-states, the slower the turn times. That's why I usually play with 6-8 city-states and 5-7 civilizations. I guess it's just how CiV was designed. cIV's turn time was 10x faster
I disagree with the statement that Civ5 is designed to be played with 6-8 civs and the about the same number of Cs. The real issue is how good and updated your rig is. I just posted a screen shot of one my games here:
yeah you are probably right, I upgraded my RAM becasue I thought that was what I was lacking the most (I hade 2gb, now 6gb) but I suppose I need to upgrade everything if I want it to run as smooth as I want
ps: I am considering buying the asus g750 instead of upgrading my desktop, how well do you guys think civ 5 will run on that laptop? I know a laptop cannot replace a desktop in preformance but I like the mobility of having a laptop in my house, or when I travel abroad.

My guess is that it will work just fine, Civ V isn't really hardware-intensive anyway. As long as you don't try to run it on a low-end budget computer or a Raspberry Pi you shouldn't have too much trouble.
