As soon as I got Beyond the Sword the first thing I wanted to play was an epic game with the Next War addons, as I always felt it strange that since Civ 2 there have not been any options for having any future technology. And this mod is billed and sold with the game as "being a standard civ game with future technology and weapons added in) However, after playing for a while, I have realized a number of problems.
1. I'm not sure if its a limitation of mods or what, but you don't get nearly the amount of customization when started a standard game of civ with Next War that you get with just started a game with no mods. For example, I wanted the only victory condition to be eliminating all of the other civilizations, but I was unable to customize this which was very frustrating.
2. The Next War mod retains some civilizations from the scenario which are not standard civilizations and when opponents are randomly selected, you can end up having all normal civilizations and then one added from Next War. In my case it was the Great Southern Empire, which is clearly Egypt and Cleopatra, but once the game has started there's nothing I could do about changing it.
3. There is no Apostolic Palace!! This was really annoying, as I was looking forward to this feature of BtS and it isn't even present at all. It made me wonder what other features may be left out when playing Next War.
4. The UN is still called "the New League of Nations" which I assume is from the scenario. This also makes it kind of strange when you intend on having a standard Civ game with added tech.
5. The number of Mech and Dreadnaught units is extremely limited! I understand that maybe for the scenario this works, but especially if you're playing in a huge world with a lot of civilizations, it can make it almost like you don't even have new units when you are restricted to building 4 mechs and 2 dreadnaughts. These restrictions should definitely be remove for the mod as otherwise you just end up using mostly modern armors and very few of the new units.
6. This is more a comment/suggestion than anything else. There really should be at least 1 new naval unit and 1 new air unit you can get with the future tech added. It unbalances the game having only new land units. It also would have been nice if there were new expensive improvements to benefit culture, research, or wealth. But I highly doubt any major changes like this will be added so this is mostly just commentary.
Hopefully this is helpful and relevant. The next game of Civ I will play will definitely be without this mod to avoid all these problems but I'd still like to see these issues get fixed as it takes away from the mod author's otherwise fine work.
Thanks for your comments.
