No Bonus Resource Tiles in Custom Maps

The title says it all, but I must elaborate.

I wanted to make custom maps bigger than the biggest X Box any little boy dreamed of (i.e., bigger than 250 by 250 tiles) but I noticed they all came out with no bonus resource (nutrients, minerals, energy) tiles on land--they would all be in water. I experimented with game-standard-sized maps, and the problem persisted. I have made many Google searches and have found no way to solve the problem.

I am not sure if it's part of the game's coding that bonus resources have to be placed by hand on land or not, but if anyone knows how to remedy this, I would appreciate the help.

Also, I am running Windows XP with the compatibility patches, if that is any help.

I'm going to guess that your custom maps have unity pods automatically placed on them. If so, your resources are hiding under the pods! Try this: start a new game and under the customized game rules, turn off unity scattering. Play a move or two and exit the game. Then restart SMAC and create a new custom map. You now should see bonus resources.

You have to place them by hand using the Map Editor, hitting the "4" key wherever you want to put them; you have to choose which resource to place there, however, be it nutrients, minerals or energy spot. See page 208 in the game manual for the full range of commands.

Did you try out the suggestion in my previous post? Bonus resources are present, just under the unity pods (if they exist). Of course you can place additional bonuses using the technique that you described, but it's not required.

I'm pointing this out to set the record straight. I'm not criticizing you, but I think that you should test your advice before posting it.

Should have been clearer. I learned this when I was designing a map from scratch (tedious work, I recommend never trying it). Generating a random map is a wholly different proposition I haven't quite worked up the nerve to try. Guess I should, eh?

OK, I understand now. The smallest maps that I create are 180x180, so auto generation is a must!
