No iron...no saltpeter.

How does one actually played these saved games ????

I don't seem to be able to do this [simple action]...

You need to download the saves first, then move them from your download directory into the directory where your other Civ3Conquests saves are, and then load them from within Conquests.

One of the main reasons for replaying Civ3 is that every map is different. Sometimes iron is so plentiful you don't even need to think about it the whole game. Sometimes it is so scarce (in your area) that your primary focus for the whole game is acquiring iron and holding onto it. The same applies to most resources, in fact I would personally rate coal as the most important resource in the game.

With such a wide variation in the abundance of resources and luxuries you have to learn how to manage them. There are many ways to improve your chances. Early exploration helps you uncover the map so that when iron or horses show up you can identify any that you can claim before your rivals. It will also indicate if you are going to have to fight to obtain a vital resource so that will affect your early game strategy. The presence or lack of a resource may affect your research choices and of course trading is another way to get what you need.

There are so many different skills required to play Civ3 that sometimes persisting with a poor start can help you learn more about the game. That said the game is still supposed to be fun so if you are not enjoying your current game there is nothing wrong with quitting and starting again.

= ok, I followed this, several times.... Keep getting a small box saying "DataIO operation - System Error: DATE"

when I finally manage to rid the screen of the small box I get a bigger box saying;

Load Error

then game exits :(

[ "... rate coal as the most important resource in the game." ]; Yes coal is important, very important, but I think Rubber is the most important.... no Rubber, no Modern anything. You can quickly just halt an Empire with cutting off their Rubber Supply.

[ "... sometimes persisting with a poor start can help you learn more about the game." ]; Agree, the road of CIVIII hard knocks is the best way to learn.
I played CIV2 for several centuries and thought CIVIII, "this be easy",,, I was smashed on Chieftain level... lol - Im now playing Monarch and continue learning... Corruption is my biggest annoyance from within the game.

I'm not much of a trader, I usually stick to just 1 other trade partner.......

I spent 3 days once looking for a really good map, without luck, then I found "Editor", :)

Not all versions of Civ can open all saves. Sorry.

What version of Conquests do you have? The fully patched version is 1.22c.

If you scan the Civ III Technical Support subforum for 'DataIO' you might find a fix. But most seemed to be due to version differences and how the saves were formatted for each version.

I have no idea what is wrong. I downloaded the files myself and then tried to load them and it works fine. Do you have the right version of Conquests, i.e. 1.22? And why does it say "...\Conquests Autosave 4000 BC.SAV" anyway? Are you tryinng with the right files?

My CIVIII Conquests is from a Disc that I bought.

In my saves it reads; Conquests Autosave 4000 BC.SAV ... I downloaded the file from TLF log.

Then accessed it thru the games "Load".

What if I have this already in SAVES,,,in AUTOSAVES ???? ///// no that was not it

Looked thru some stuff on this,,seems that it may be this:

"... the only data i/o errors that I know of with C3C are when you try to load a save created in an earlier patch".

I don't have problems with my saved games,,just this one i downloaded from Civ3 forums....

Which version do you have? When you start Conquest and you are just looking at the main screen (i.e. where you have the menu that let's you select "New Game", "Load Game" and so on) there is a number in the bottom left-hand corner. That's the version number. For me it says 1.22.

If this number something lower than 1.22 you might want to patch your installed version. The patch can be downloaded from here, I think:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=13

Ive been in scenarios like yours, the long bow is a powerful unit when that happens, usual answer is to build a few LB armies and go capture that resource you need.

Those saves are from version 1.22. There is no c after it.
The game is Civ 3 Complete.
I guess maybe I need to look for a final patch.

I have been playing some Civ 4 games since the one I posted here.
I think Civ 4 is much easier on the lower levels.
I have little trouble on the 2nd easiest difficulty, whereas in Civ 3 It's a struggle.

Civ 4 also gives you considerably more resources.

If you have Civ 3 Complete, all three versions are fully patched. If you have tried to apply a patch to them, that may have messed things up; I did for me with Civ III Gold (vanilla and Play the World).

Civ 4 does have more resources, but I think they went overboard with them. It has been a while since I played a Civ4 game, but many of the resources needed a tech and a building before you could use them. Techs make sense but the building was overkill (to me). Too much of a good thing.

I haven't played many games in Civ4; I still have some goals in CivIII to accomplish before I try Civ 4 again.

I'm more worried about getting more problems loading on the Patch..... I remember having troubles with Patches when I first started playing CIVIII, then having to un-install the game, then just to re-install it again:gripe:
