I have kind of a ridiculous problem. When i start the game i get the loading splash screen and then the games crashes with an "bla bla has encountered a critical error and needs to close" error.

I searched the forums and couldn't find a related problem. All the problems are video, xml, python related and the users seem to get a more informative error message. I just get the standard one. I have an ati x800 card but this doesn't seem to be an ati card problem as a friend of mine has the exact same problem and he has an nvidia card.

Anyway most of the problems have solutions related to editing the config ini file. Well I searched for the file in the game dir and i found a lnk file but the Civilisation4.ini file to which the link points doesn't exist. In fact the whole "syd meyer's civilization 4" dir that should be in my documents/my games doesn't exist and there seem to be more links in the game dir that point to this location.

This lnk files seem to be created incorrectly anyway as they seem to assume that i have the the my documents dir in c:\documents and settings which i don't. The lnk file says: "%HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%\My Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\CivilizationIV.ini". Even if i move the my documents dir to the location the game expects and reinstall the game the my games\.. dir and the ini files still don't get created.

I think the game crash is related to the fact that it can't find this files. I could manually create the needed files but i have no ideea what they should contain. Any ideas?

Thanks.

Yes, this is exactly the same error which i get. And I've got the same links going nowhere. I tried to create the missing folders, but it didn't do any thing.

If someone can share their CivilizationIV.ini i would be grateful.

Same problem here. Doing my head in.
All we need....i think is someone to share/copy and paste their ini file for us :)

Ted!

Well, I don't know about your error, but I do know those configuration files, as well as all the folders they reside in, are not created until you run the game. I looked for them after I installed the game, but like you could not find them. However, they then appeared after I ran the game the first time. Though, in actuality, I didn't truly run the game since I have the ATI problem, but the game did go through part of its initialization, which seemed to include creating those files.

That's not much help to you, however, if you can't even begin to run the game...

if we get the contents of an ini posted/attached then we could create our own ini and try and figure out the problem?
getting an ini file and putting it into the right folder will enable us to move onto to the next problem/knock the ini off the list as possible problems?

Okay, I don't know if it will help, but here are the contents of my Civilization 4 folder, which for me was under My Documents/My Games. That is of course the settings and saved game folder, not the actual game folder in case anyone was worried.

Edit: By the way I changed a couple of things in the .ini file. It is set to window mode at 1024 x 768 resolution, so you may want to change that.

I am having the same problem: every time I start the game, the splash screen appears then the game crashes. I have tried copying someone else's ini file into the correct directory but it dosent seem to make any difference. It seems to crash right after the DVD starts spinning, so I am thinking maybe this is a problem related to the copy protection?

Nope, doesn't want to work for me. Same error.
blah i hate computers.

Yeah, I tried downloading that and nothing! It seems we are having a commong problem:

1) The loading screen comes up, then you wait a period, then CIV4 crashes, saying "CIV4 encountered an error"... and you don't even see any initilization or anything like that
2) There is no folder in my games, or civilizationIV.ini.... meaning.. we have never ran the game succesfully...

I updated all my drivers.. what the hell is the problem.. it just won't run!!!!

Any suggestions people?!

Yeah , I have 1 account only. Does it make a difference? I tried both installing the game under the option, ALL USERS, and NOT all users. Didn't do anything. Are you suggesting creating a new account? Probably won't work... any other suggestions.

I have this exact same problem. what the hell. We need to talk to someone from Firaxis.

I called take 2 games, the man told me to upgrade my video card driver, I did.. still same error.

I just called take 2 games, they told me this folder is supposed to be created after you run your game for the first time, so don't worry about it if you don't have it in my doc. But still , game didn't work.

For the record, this seems like its related to the copy protection. I ran a program called 'DIAG' on the PLAY CD, hoping it might point out what was wrong. The program is described as 'Safedisc SRV Tool APP'. When this ran, the Civ 4 loading screen appeared and locked up just like when trying to run teh game itself. I have a Rosewill DVD/CDRW combo drive. I upgraded the drive firmware and had the same problem.

Go Go copy protection! I'm all for preventing privacy, but anything that prevents me from using a legitamately purchased item is just f'd up, IMHO.

They used SafeDisc4 on the cd, that's what I have heard. I have a Lite On CD burner, and a Lite On DVD Burn on my machine, I also has 1 virtual drive with Deamon Tool. I SafeDisc doesn't like these. That is sick. I paid freakin 50 buck for the game. I have to work 20 minutes to make that 50 buck.

I have the same problem... I"ve done anything possible to run this game with no results... What i wrong with this game?? Why some people don't have that kind of problem?? STUPID!!
