No need for giant units

I just can't get over how ugly the cities are in Civ4 :) I know, I know, I keep bringing it up, but really. The cities (on the map) in Civ3 look so great (with different styles for different cultures, even). The cities in Civ4 look so ridiculous even half way up close I would be embarrassed to have modeled them. Any of you noticed that the great pyramid of Giza is smaller than the average clay house? At least, in the rudimentary 'city view' in Civ3 the wonders are actually much bigger (and look a ton better!) than the normal houses.

Please someone tell me Firaxis is pulling our legs and they'll release proper graphics and not this laughable pile of lost polygons ;)

Save your money, Ironduck. There are other games with better graphics out there.

There aren't any with worse it seems ;)

But Civ has fantastic gameplay, so why should I save my money? Why can't I say that Civ4 has ridiculously poor graphics when it does? We can have hundreds of threads full of praise, but not any that complain about the negative aspects?

I think more people are haveing a conflict with your reasoning than they are your complaint...

It's "ALMOST" akin to complaining that the wrapper on your delicious candy bar isn't colorful enough.

i wonder...why you didn't have a problem with the unit sizes in Civ3? They are even more huge then in Civ4.
The issue is that you can zoom in at Civ4 and at Civ3 you can't. Simple solution: don't zoom in;)

I wonder if you could have the units stay the same size as you zoom in and out?

I agree this is an ugly screenshot; the main problem I see is with the terrain placement itself.
For some reason, deserts, grasslands and plains are scattered everywhere regardless of climate zones. This makes it very messy and hard to understand, because most people understand that the world is made up of large patches of terrain that is the generally the same.

I'm betting that this is just to show off the terrain. In the actual game, I'd assume the terrain placement would be a little more uniform.

I don't agree. The map in Civ4 is meant to be WYSIWYG according to Firaxis. This means that instead of looking at menus we're supposed to look at the map to see what goes on. What are in the cities etc. Well, when I do that (those screenshots we've seen) all I see is a big ugly clutter that is not functional at all.

I would much rather have clear functional graphics than such an ugly clutter. I can't see that is unreasonable.

i think cities in civ4 look better than in civ3. and the way they modelled the improvements and wonders is perfect for gameplay - you can see what's in the cities without having some lousy pyramid cover 8 tiles. or even worse, keep the size of wonders and make the rest of the city unviewable. <_<

AND the NEW screen shots show that alll of our wishes about this topic hath been bestowed upon us...SMALLER UNITS... :thanx:

the funny part is ..some one from this thread talking about not complaining over unit size..is now quoted as saying..."the units are too small"

Yeah :D Did that for effect. Seriously though... If those were a constant size at all zooms, you may aswell remove the unit models and just leave a flag to mark them.

i prefer the term 3D sprite :P
it would be good to have shortcuts to quickly change the sizes in-game. that way if youre not in the mood of scrolling around, grow 'em! if you just want to stay zoomed in like the screens and enjoy a more realistic feel, then shrink 'em. i would be switching among both rather frequently myself. (though if i had to pick one: big!)
