Hi everybody,
I am new here and trying to get started.
My son received Civilization V Gold edition for Christmas. We are able to play single player games and love it but we really want to play a game against each other on the same machine. (with other computer generated civilizations) At this point when we set up it takes us all the way to "Load game" but there is no "Play" button.
I reinstalled, verified, thought perhaps it has something to do with screen resolution and tried to adjust that, looked for any clashing programs but there is hardly anything on this computer and still no fix.
Does anybody have ideas of what we are doing wrong or any options that I can try to get it working, please!
Thanks in advance!

Hello,

Awesome you are playing Civ with your son; I am a firm believer that Civ is a PERFECT learning tool that rewards thinking ahead and strategic planning.

What you are looking for is "Hotseat". It's under multiplayer > hotseat. You will be able to save games and it will play like single player, except you will be alternating who is in control.

Does this answer your question?

edit: and btw- since you will be in "multiplayer", the play button turns into "host" i believe. Setup a game (doesn't matter how many AI you choose), and once you are in the pre-game lobby you will be able to change (via dropdown menu) one of the AI slots to a human slot. Then just "edit" (small button upper left of player slot) the name to whatever you guys want to go by.

After preparing all the slots in the hotseat game, you will see your own slot and a Human player slot. The game will report that the other player is not present. Ignore this. Configure the slots to the civilization and difficulty settings you want. Then find next to your own slot a circular checkbox. As soon as you check this box, the game will begin and you can play your turn, set a password, do whatever.

Then your son can take his turn and you may proceed with hot seat gameplay.

You can control different civilizations in a map with hotseat. If you put hotseat, and put 2 human players and the rest AI, you most likely will be able to control the 2 human players. Only one player can take a turn though. As soon as one human civilization finishes his/her turn, the other human civilization can take a turn.
