Ive played the game 3 times now, I get all agerssive and do a massive land grab at start and get myeslf a nice big island, steam ahead on the tech all is going well then when I get to building a spaceship, NO ALLUMINIUM 17 hours of play the swines! HAd to go for a bland boring diplomatic victory in the end. Happened in my last game with oil what a nightmare, anyone else having these problems or am I being a bit dim witted about it?

Why don't you trade for Alluminum? From what you were saying, I have a feeling that you are the only one in the space age and all the AIs are in the ancient age or whatever stone age, and they do not have any knowledge about Alluminum. In that case, why not give them some of your techs to promote them to the space age as well...one way or another, I'm sure you should be able to trade for alluminum without any problem.

Or you could have conquered a city with Aliminum since you are ahead this much it shouldnt be any problem :)

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Diplo boring? OK, if you bibe every one, it can be. Or if you ally everybody against your opponent. Boring diplo... It is exciting, the vote is always something I fear and wish at the same time. Diplo rules!!! but not in GOTM.

It's always good to have an empire that is big enough to have a little bit (or a lot) of each terrain, tundra, grass, forest, mountain, desert, swamp in it. This increases your chance of getting the proper resources when you need them. Even if you want to be peaceful, you need to go out an grab some land. I see trading as the final option because anything can happen to break your deal leaving you wanting. I would rather go take a vital resource by force.

Try my maps. I always include some of every resource, and make sure a few iron works locations are available. Click on the links in my sig to get to them. :)

This can pretty much only happen on tiny.. so perhaps start playing on bigger maps? :)
Actually, even on tiny maps the map generator ALWAYS includes some of every resource at the start. However, perhaps all the Aluminium sources got extinguished over the time since he discovered Rocketry? (Though that still seems unlikely to me... )
