I'm about to throw my game in the trash. CivIII Conquests. The last 10 or so times I've played I've had to go to war to get my resources. I can't build my railway because I rarely get coal. Never get rubber . Occassionaly I get oil. If I can tolerate it long enough, I never get aluminum. Is anyone else having this problem. Is another patch needed. I've heard that because of the new terrain taking up space that they didn't program resources to pop up more.

 Where'd you hear that, you're brain?

AFAIK, they DID program rescources to appear less and thats only because they wanted you to get pissed off.

:mischief:

If you really want rescources...

1) Make the maps yourself
2) Go to C&C forum and find some good maps and stuff

If you have an early war and end up with an empire twice the size of a normal start position then you should get most resources possibly missing out on one. An early war is probably best as you should either get horses or iron which allow some reasonably decent army... And if you have a small empire then missing out on some resources might not be as bad since units can still move around quickly on roads.

I think Adolf Hitler and Emperor Hirohito had exactly the same problem...

An incredibly cool, and incredibly intelligent person told him, I think :D :mischief:

I went for the 2 largest empires early on, and won. So I had 3 Civ's worth of territory, and still got no Horses or Iron. There is no sure way to get the resources.

Hopefully this can be addressed in a patch :)

The important thing though is that your post highlights the fact hat its still possible to win even without some resources.

bimmer,

you have 3 options:

1. go into the ditor and increase resource appereance of coal, rubber, aluminum, uranium and oil by about 10 to 20% each.

2. learn to play far more peacefully thus increasing the chances that through diplomacy and trade you will still have acess to resources that are not within your empire (switzerland style). learn to play far more aggressively, without any qualms about taking by force whatever you lack (totalitarian style).

3. throw the game in the trash.

I reccomend number 2.

I kinda sorta maybe like this change. Even the largest of empires end up with a need for a resource. I know that on my current game, of the eight (8) civs on the same contient as I, only about three or four had iron. They all had horses, though.

It adds a bit more realism, though. Look at the U.S. If you translate then into Civ3, they had oil for a while, until they used it all up (Ohio and Pennsylvania area). Now they have to trade for it from the Middle East, and it affects nearly every part of our society.

Personally, the only reason I don't like it is that if you find you don't have a certain resource, it might just irreversibly doom your game. Sometimes there are ways to make up for it - getting riflemen or using horsemen as opposed to swordmen. But in some cases, you end up getting left behind without having a say in it.

Thanks to all who took the time to help me out. It is however very frustrating when you are minding your own and certain civs try to extort you. You have to give because I don't have the resources to build the proper army. Thankyou again.

I agree with how annoying it is having No resources. I was an age ahead of every one, but the computer went to war with me and took half my land. Because they had resoures. I had nothing. But I had alot better luck with resources later in the games

The reduction in resources definitely adds something to the game. It forces you to play the game a little more differently each time, since you can't count on having all those resources. You and I are smart enough to make adjustments to compensate. The AI is not. So the lucky AI that get enough resources live and the others do not.

If you don't like Ision's options you can always play PTW.

I might be wrong but I think the chance of whether you get resources or not depends on size of the map.
I play C3C and i used to play on standard size maps/continents almost all the time and rarely had problems with resources.
It looks to me that when you switch to larger maps there are same number of resources but because map is larger resources are sparser.
It's just a speculation but that what i felt.

I may just be that on larger maps here are more AI civs that can expand into the same area so they are more likely to be able to grab the resources as they know where they are...

The thing that makes me  is when you find the perfect spot for a
city and build there, of course the resourses show up a few turns later
JUST outside your territory and in an AI's that swooped it up  .
Makes me :hammer: them shortly thereafter in most cases ;) .

Hey, isn't that what makes most fun out of this game...
You - "So, Shaka, how about you give me that iron?, oh and gems and silks as well"
He - "Don't think so"
You - "Shaka is a bad boy today" :spank:
..... and few turns later....
Your military advisor - "Your majesty, Fragile zulu is destroyed!"
Your people - "We love the king!"

I think this is one of my favorite differences in the epic games with conquests. It adds another degree of strategy to the game, and makes you think twice about just not expanded in that worthess desert. It also makes pillaging resources much more viable (since they often only have one of that type). It is annoying when you don't have them, but then I have to get my war machine going quickly, and target a weaker opponent that has them.

You also forget one more thing. That the AI has the same problem, and it can be fun to extort the AI for precious resources.

Expansion. If you want resources concentrate on expansion. I always have plenty of resources when I have a large empire.

Make a scenario and delete sugar, tabacco, fruit, and oasises. Also delete the resources from marshes. That should give you a more, vanilla/PTW-like start. I had a thread with a scenario like that, but I'm not sure what happened to my scenario attachment...

:rotfl: No, I think that would be Gainy (judging by his reply earlier...).

@CT: That makes sesnse :). They take up space other resources could have used...
